Xiaomi Sound is a new compact high-end speaker with a premium design and tuning by Harman / Kardon

Xiaomi’s big August conference was not only about the new Mi MIX 4 and tablets. Xiaomi is also getting back into the wireless speaker segment, where it wants to bring quality sound and some extra features. The new audio product is the Xiaomi Sound speaker.

360-level sound by Harman / Kardon

The speaker itself has the shape of a taller puck. It will be available in silver and black. The speakers are arranged around its perimeter, delivering 360-degree sound. To keep the sound as clean and high-quality as possible, tuning is handled by Harman / Kardon, which also worked on the speakers in the newly presented smartphone Xiaomi Mi MIX 4.

Xiaomi Sound can get pretty loud, with the manufacturer stating a maximum volume of 90 dB. For such a compact device, it can outshine much larger speakers mainly thanks to its compactness—without compromising the quality and loudness of the music you play.

Inside the elegant design, you’ll find a 2.25-inch full-range 12W speaker along with a pair of passive radiators. Besides sound tuning by the aforementioned Harman / Kardon brand, the speaker also has Hi-Res Audio certification, through which the manufacturer promises lossless sound quality similar to CD quality.

In addition, the new Xiaomi speaker also features Ultra Wide Band technology (similar to Xiaomi Mi MIX 4), WiFi, Harman AudioEFX, Bluetooth in the latest version 5.2, and support for the Chinese voice assistant XiaoAI.

Plus, there’s a feature that lets you pair up to 8 of these speakers together, so they play in sync. This comes in handy, for example, when organizing a party or setting up a complete home audio system.

Price and availability

For now, Xiaomi Sound will only be available for the domestic Chinese market. However, it’s very likely we’ll see it for sale with international retailers in the coming weeks. The price is set at a friendly 499 yuan, which is about 60 euros.
