Xiaomi is officially no longer hiding its ambitions—the upcoming series Xiaomi 17 is truly supposed to be a direct response to the iPhone 17. Company CEO Lei Jun plans to stir up the waters of the market and move Xiaomi one step closer to absolute top-tier status.
And although a global launch of multiple models is expected, leaked information points to a negative twist. Not all versions will roll out beyond their home country, China.
Only the 2 models from the Xiaomi 17 series will come to our market.
On a global level, the base model Xiaomi 17 will be available—internally labeled as “P3 – pudding”—as well as the flagship model Xiaomi 17 Ultra, codenamed “P1 – nezha”.
These two devices will be available in multiple regions—specifically in India, Türkiye, Russia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and most European countries, including the EEA zone. The Japanese market isn’t mentioned with a specific software version, but that doesn’t mean sales in Japan will be ruled out—Xiaomi may offer a global version there as well.
But for many brand fans outside China, this comes as a cold shower. The most advanced models in the series—Xiaomi 17 Pro (internal code name P2 – popsicle) and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max (Q200 – pandora)—will likely be exclusive to the Chinese market only.

These news updates are a bit painful, because it’s precisely these models that are supposed to bring revolutionary features like a secondary rear display or an entirely new chip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. With the premium performance and bold design, it will remain available only to home customers.
But nothing new here—Xiaomi uses this strategy again and again. It keeps the most ambitious technologies at home to strengthen its position in the demanding Chinese market, where competitors like Huawei, Honor, and Vivo definitely aren’t sleeping.
At the same time, it’s building a strong position globally as well, where there’s still plenty to offer even without the priciest models. For the manufacturer, it’s simply a convenient situation—but the real victim is the potential customer.
