European Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 4A with speeds up to 1 Gbit and 4 fewer antennas

17. January 2020 4 min read 0 comments

This year, Xiaomi is celebrating the fifth anniversary since launching its first WiFi router. For the occasion, they showed their most powerful Mi WiFi Mesh Router, but we also got the introduction of affordable Mi WiFi 4A routers.

EU version available in stores

There are two models available – the classic Mi WiFi Router 4A and also the version with the Gigabit Edition label. The naming is clear: it’s the gigabit version. What’s interesting about this router, though, is its amazing price-to-features ratio.

We’ve checked the prices of many gigabit routers on the market, but the Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition comes out as the cheapest in this category.

The best-known seller of Chinese electronics, Gearbest, has even included in its offer a international version of this router that includes English and works fully within Europe — that is, in Slovakia and the Czech Republic too.

Simple design, interesting internals

The design of the Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is completely identical to the classic Mi WiFi Router 4 that was introduced earlier. The router features four omnidirectional antennas with improved performance, which shouldn’t be a problem even with thicker walls.

In addition, there’s a pair of chips inside for higher signal quality — PA (power amplifier) effectively boosts signal transmission performance, while LNA (low-noise amplifier) improves signal-reception sensitivity.

The manufacturer hasn’t forgotten about effective cooling either — it’s handled by a pair of passive heat sinks. This ensures an even more stable performance.

Made for Xiaomi smart home devices

The new feature compared to previous cheap Xiaomi routers is the dual-band standard 802.11ac. The router can broadcast on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, with a maximum theoretical speed of 1167 Mbps.

It also added the merging of two WiFi names into one — if you use dual-band broadcasting. That way, you won’t have to deal with multiple WiFi names.

Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is designed to connect many devices. It’s mainly optimized for devices from the Xiaomi ecosystem, but of course it works with other devices too. The advantage when connecting Xiaomi devices is, for example, that you don’t need to enter the WiFi network password.

When you change the password, the router automatically syncs it with all connected devices. Your smart home will stay running at full power. 128 MB of RAM allows you to connect up to 128 devices at the same time.

Since it’s a gigabit router, you get a gigabit Ethernet port for even faster connection. It also comes with a more powerful dual-core MT7621A MIPS processor with an 880 MHz clock, so it processes tasks even faster.

IPv6 support and parental control

IPv6 protocol support addresses the lack of address space in the older IPv4 protocol. That means Mi WiFi Router 4A can be used without issues even in large corporations or universities. This feature will be available for routers starting May 2019.

As part of the updates, there are also broader options for parental control. If your kids are already using the internet, new routers let you take full control over the displayed content. You can limit access to specific web pages by blocking URL addresses. There’s also speed limiting or setting the connection time for a particular device.

The Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition can identify a suspicious device on the network. It reports this kind of situation immediately via a notification through the app. With a single button, you can disconnect the troublemaker. Through the Mi WiFi app, you can also manage the router’s settings completely—also remotely.
