Xiaomi pleasantly surprised us today not only with the handy Miija Phillips smart night light, but also with a pair of new routers. Mi WiFi Router 4A and Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition are very affordable routers, but they come with great features.

Simple design, interesting internals
Xiaomi has been active in the field of networking equipment for 5 years. This year, they also plan to introduce a new flagship among their routers — Xiaomi Mesh. However, before that, we’ve already gotten the 4th generation of the “a-class” routers, which are also very interesting.
The pair of new routers comes with a simple design in white. The design of the Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit version is completely identical to the classic Mi WiFi Router 4 introduced earlier. Both offer a set of four omnidirectional antennas with improved performance that shouldn’t have any trouble even through thicker walls.
On top of that, inside there’s a pair of chips for better signal quality — PA (power amplifier) effectively boosts the signal transmission performance, while LNA (low-noise amplifier) improves the signal reception sensitivity. The manufacturer didn’t forget about efficient cooling either, which is handled by even a pair of passive heatsinks. This ensures even more stable performance.
Made for Xiaomi smart home devices
The new thing compared to the previous cheap Xiaomi routers is the dual-band standard 802.11ac. The routers can thus broadcast on 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies, with a maximum theoretical speed of 1167 Mbit/s. Another novelty is the integration of two WiFi names into one — when you use both frequencies. That means you won’t get tangled up in WiFi names anymore.
Mi WiFi Router 4A is built to connect many devices. It’s mainly optimized for devices from the Xiaomi ecosystem, but of course it can handle others too. The advantage when connecting Xiaomi devices is, for example, that you don’t have to enter a password.
When you change the password, the router automatically synchronizes with all connected devices. Your smart home will thus stay fully operational all the time. 64 MB of RAM in the Mi WiFi Router 4A allows up to 64 devices to be connected at the same time.

The improved Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition model includes up to 128 MB of RAM memory and also has a gigabit Ethernet port for even faster connection. The standard version offers up to 100 Mbit connection. It also has a more powerful dual-core processor with a clock speed of 880 MHz, so it processes tasks even faster.
IPv6 support and parental control
IPv6 protocol support solves the shortage of address space in the older IPv4 protocol. The Mi WiFi Router 4A can therefore be used without problems in large corporations or universities. This feature will be available for these routers starting May 2019.
The new lineup also brings broader options for parental control. If your children are already using the internet, the new routers offer full control over the content being displayed. You can limit access to specific websites by blocking URL addresses. Speed limits and also limiting the connection time of a specific device are available too.
Mi WiFi Router 4A can detect suspicious devices on the network. It reports this situation immediately via a notification through the app. You can disconnect the intruder with a single button. Through the Mi WiFi app, you can also fully manage router settings— even remotely.
Extreme pricing policy
All these features look great and, sure enough, expensive. But that doesn’t apply to Xiaomi. The classic Mi WiFi Router 4A model will be available in mainland China for 119 yuan, which is about €15 / 400 CZK. The more powerful Mi WiFi Router 4A Gigabit Edition will cost 169 yuan. In other words, roughly €22 / 575 CZK.
Xiaomi is once again showing off its extreme pricing policy. We haven’t found these new routers yet on the listings of international retailers, but the moment they show up, we’ll let you know via our newsletter.
