We already heard about cameras hidden directly in the display last year. These days, the only obstacle for an active display is the selfie camera.
Just now, the Xiaomi brand unveiled their prototype and also patented the idea. At the moment, this technology is still not available on the commercial market.
Xiaomi’s patent revealed!
Thanks to the LetsGoDigital portal, we now at least have a new preview of what it could look like.
Verified phone design with a flat screen and thin bezels, similar to the Xiaomi Mi 9T / Pro from last year.
The camera itself could be placed in the top part of the display, either in the left corner or in the middle. The patent explains that when the selfie camera is activated, the top portion of the screen can be turned off independently from the rest of the display.
That’s where a black inactive strip would remain, allowing you to see the camera lens. When the camera isn’t being used, the display returns to normal and gives you an experience across the full screen. The principle of the technology is based on changing light transparency.
An advantage of this technology could be a larger lens, which would deliver better-quality photos.

The back of the phone remains unchanged. According to the renders, the phone will feature a vertically aligned triple camera, just like in previous models.
As is known, Xiaomi Mi 10 already uses 4 cameras, which could appear again in this case as well.
Vision or reality?
In most cases, this described Xiaomi phone model doesn’t necessarily lead to a real product.
It wasn’t that long ago when Redmi, led by Lu Weibing, said that camera-under-display technology isn’t ready yet for commercial sale.
Company management explained that current smartphone displays significantly reduce the light that reaches the camera under the display, adversely affecting photo quality.
Unless Xiaomi significantly improves the technology in the coming months, it’s questionable whether we’ll ever use under-display cameras in Xiaomi or Redmi phones. Despite that, there’s information that the first such smartphone should arrive in 2021.
For example, you can point to when Xiaomi presented a smartphone with a bendable display last year. However, despite good marketing, this model still hasn’t made it to the market.
