The displays in our smartphones are constantly being improved. Besides larger screen sizes, manufacturers also try to minimize the side bezels for the best possible user experience. Perhaps the biggest pioneer in the smartphone display space is Samsung with their AMOLED.
This year, the Chinese manufacturer OnePlus stands out with a stunning 2K AMOLED display in its flagship model OnePlus 7 Pro, featuring an impressive refresh rate of 90 Hz. The display immediately earned the award for the best smartphone display – from the prestigious DisplayMate test.
From 60 Hz to 84 Hz
An AMOLED display is also used in this year’s flagship of the Chinese Xiaomi – Xiaomi Mi 9. However, compared to the OnePlus 7 Pro, at stock it doesn’t deliver as high a refresh rate, since it has the standard 60 Hz, like the vast majority of smartphones on the market.

On the popular XDA Developers forum, however, a guide has appeared on how to overclock the great Mi 9 display from 60 Hz to 84 Hz. If you own this smartphone and want to experience the smoothest MIUI usage, you can give it a try.
What will you need?
Before you jump into overclocking, keep in mind that you do the whole process at your own risk, and nobody is responsible for any mistakes or a damaged smartphone. You can only blame yourself for that.
Overclocking the display on the Xiaomi Mi 9 is only possible if you have an unlocked bootloader. You’ll also need the TWRP recovery menu, since the process involves flashing different files. You can find the complete guide on the XDA Developers forum after clicking here.
According to an editor from XDA Developers, the difference from overclocking the display is noticeable right after restarting the smartphone. The tweak was tested using a modified MIUI ROM from Xiaomi.eu. Users who have been running the modification for a few days so far report no major issues. Some, however, noticed a slight green tint on the display, even though it isn’t very pronounced.
At XiaomiPlanet, we currently can’t test this tweak yet, because our editorial Xiaomi Mi 9 is somewhere between China and Europe at the moment. On a plane. 🙂 As soon as it arrives, we won’t miss the chance to overclock the display.
So, are you going for it?
