Xiaomi is known for forming partnerships with dynamic Chinese startups that manufacture various devices for the tech giant. Then it sells them under its own brand or directly under the startup's brand.
One of them is the sister company FIMI, which made the well-known Mi Drone 4K for Xiaomi. Now they’re bringing their first foldable drone, the FIMI X8 SE, directly going after the DJI-branded competition.

Flying with drones in Slovakia
With drones that don’t require a license or registration, you can fly anywhere the regulation allows. The regulation lists places with a complete ban on flying: national parks, no-fly zones of military bases, power plants, some landmarks, city centers, and in the vicinity of airports—at least 5.5 km from the airport.
In the Slovak Republic, you can fly a drone only within line of sight of your own eyes and without any visual aids, except for glasses or lenses prescribed by doctors.
You also can’t place any obstacle between you and the drone, such as trees, buildings, or a hill. Flying at night is also prohibited.
If you’re going to fly a drone, you must follow certain rules. By controlling the drone, you become part of air traffic.
With a drone you can’t fly over people without their consent, and neither near buildings or local roads. These measures are in place to protect privacy and health.
Registration and approval from the Transport Authority is only required when you use the drone for commercial, experimental, or research activities.
In practice, this means that if you take photos or videos and sell that footage, you must be registered with the Transport Authority because it’s already considered drone aerial work.
Whether you fly for commercial or recreational purposes, you should not exceed the height limit of 300 m above the ground. Up to 150 m, you’ll share airspace only with other drones, and higher up you may run into small aircraft.
If you’re a beginner, it’s not recommended to fly at such heights due to weather conditions that require high drone-control skills.
This is how the FIMI X8 SE records:
Fits in your pocket
The new FIMI X8 SE comes with a foldable structure, more precisely with arms that hold the propellers. That makes it a direct competitor to the DJI Mavic Pro.
When folded, the drone measures 204 x 106 x 72.6 mm, and if you have bigger pockets, you won’t have any problem carrying it in them. Its weight is 790 grams, and compared to the well-known Mi Drone 4K, the weight has been reduced by a solid 42.8%. The dimensions shrank by up to 70.2%. Quality, however, was kept the same.
The new drone from Xiaomi and FIMI also boasts improved aerodynamic efficiency. The maximum flight speed is 18 m/s (almost 65 km/h). The drone can reach up to a maximum height of 500 meters from the takeoff point, and its wind resistance handles speeds up to 50 km/h.
The climb speed is 5 m/s, and it can descend at 4 m/s. GPS with GLONASS is included for precise positioning. A 4500 mAh battery should provide enough power for 33 minutes of flight time.
The controller includes a built-in 3900 mAh battery and offers control range of up to 5 km. The drone and controller communicate via frequency ranges 5.725 – 5.850 GHz. You can insert a smartphone or tablet into the controller, as the controller has an adjustable width. On the display, you can then watch real-time HD video streaming through the original app.
4K Sony sensor and 3-axis stabilizer
FIMI X8 SE also brings a high-quality camera. Sony IMX378 sensor is placed in a mechanical gimbal with 3-axis stabilization. This ensures ultra-smooth video without shakes even at high speeds. The sensor has a resolution of 12 MPx, 1/2.3″ sensor size, f/2.2 aperture, and 1.55 µm pixel size. The same sensor has been used, for example, in the Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
In collaboration with the Ambarella image processor, you get 4K video at 30 fps with a high bitrate of up to 100 Mbps. The maximum shutter speed is 1/8000s, and the sensor also supports saving in DNG RAW format.
That gives more advanced users the chance to win in post-processing. For video, ISO is available in the range 100 – 3200, while for photos the maximum is ISO 1600. Video is saved in MP4 format onto a microSD card with a capacity of up to 64 GB. The manufacturer recommends Sandisk or Kingston cards with U3 speed class.
Anyone can already create cinematic footage
The manufacturer equips the new drone with interesting video recording modes. For example, in a cinematic mode, the drone circles the selected object or flies backward/forward while continuously tracking the object. There’s also object tracking in motion, for example a person while running.
A new feature is the ability to plan flight routes and tasks that the drone should perform. Among the functions, you’ll also find the option to capture a 180° panorama and time-lapse shots with smooth motion.
The drone is even equipped with a person rescue function– SAR (Search and rescue). Thanks to precise GPS and 3x digital zoom, rescuers can use the drone to locate a target even in hard-to-reach terrain, for example in the mountains.
There’s also a precise landing mode, where the camera recognizes the landing area and lands smoothly. Safety systems such as a return-to-home button, obstacle avoidance, and return home when the battery is low are also a given.
