Our favorite Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has shared the first information about its new platform, HyperOS, which is expected to replace the MIUI software skin.
Xiaomi brings HyperOS: A new operating system platform
Nobody expected this kind of move. And yet it happened. In the tech world, it’s a rare sight—defined even by the opposite of the phrase “Don’t change it when it works.” Xiaomi during yesterday’s day changed the name of its user interface and, through its CEO, Lei Jun, unveiled the new operating system Hyper OS.
For now, we don’t know the meaning of this label. Some smartphone makers use different names for their software depending on the region. For example, Chinese Vivo uses OriginOS in China, while in the global market it’s called FuntouchOS. Both interfaces are, however, based on Android. The opposite is China’s Huawei, which has its own HMS mobile services package and Harmony OS.
Brands tend to name their interfaces in a similar way to the operating system. It’s important to note that the operating system and the user interface are different terms and are often confused. Many user interfaces are essentially graphical overlays built on Android and include additional customization.
Even though in the last few weeks we could follow a lot of leaks about MIUI 15, they should be part of the HyperOS that’s being prepared right now. Some leaks even mentioned a new name for the Chinese market, which would be either HyperOS or PengpaiOS. There’s also the option of keeping the MIUI branding—for example, only for the global market.
Features originally planned for MIUI 15
As we could already see in previous leaks and screenshots from MIUI, it’s clear that MIUI 15 builds based on the Android 14 system are being developed. The identified builds are indeed based on the Android operating system, specifically version 14, which confirms that claims about a “new operating system” aren’t accurate.
Xiaomi originally planned to use the MIUI 15 name, and the official MIUI server has already confirmed it. The “Bigversion” part refers to the number 15, meaning the MIUI version. ‘[Bigversion] => 15’ thus means MIUI 15. For some reason, however, a decision was made to change this name. Wang Hua, PR manager at Xiaomi Group, said that names like MiOS, CNMiOS, and MinaOS are completely wrong.
As mentioned above, the MiOS name found online isn’t correct. In recent days, the names “Hyper” and “Pengpai” were registered. That’s why it’s likely that the new interface will be called either “HyperOS” or “PengpaiOS”. The reason for Xiaomi’s unexpected change isn’t known, but it could be an attempt to mimic other Chinese brands with similar names.
The global market will probably have to wait
Also, when we examine images from the MIUI system, we can see that there are some lines of code related to MIUI 15. Xiaomi therefore likely considered using the MIUI 15 name, but later decided to completely change the direction of this label. So will there be some changes on the global market as well?
The official MIUI 15 EEA build developed for Xiaomi 12T is shown in the image above. The latest internal MIUI 15 build is labeled MIUI-V15.0.0.1.ULQEUXM. So MIUI 15 is being tested for Xiaomi 12T users in Europe, and it will most likely be released under this name to users in the global market.
The new “HyperOS” or “PengpaiOS” will be available to users in China again. However, we don’t expect any dramatic differences in features, and we still have to keep in mind that this is speculation and unofficial information. It’s entirely possible that, after a few weeks to a month, this new name HyperOS will also reach Europe.
