When designing electronics, you also need to consider heat dissipation. Heat is unwanted and, in the case of mobile phones, it can harm not only the battery but also the device’s performance in a given situation. Xiaomi today, on October 5, 2021, announced a new heat-dissipation technology. It’s called Loop LiquidCool Technology.
Advanced cooling can boost your smartphone’s performance
You may have already heard that today’s smartphones include chambers with a small amount of liquid. It’s a technology inspired by the cooling method used in the aerospace industry. The newly presented technology uses the so-called capillary effect.
As the temperature rises, the liquid inside the sealed chamber starts to evaporate. Heat is therefore dissipated effectively toward the cooler area, until condensation occurs. Compared with other smartphone heat-dissipation techniques using liquid, this new solution can boast double the efficiency.
The rollout of Loop LiquidCool Technology is expected next year
Its first use is expected in Xiaomi devices released in the second quarter of next year. The chamber itself already looks more advanced. It’s made up of several “tubes” and chambers at once, with each one serving a slightly different purpose. The evaporated liquid moves into the larger chamber, where it condenses.
The liquid then returns to the previous space and the process can repeat. Even though the principle remains practically the same as with earlier versions of similar cooling systems, the efficiency of the new Loop LiquidCool Technology is much higher.
The special design of the entire component ensures a smoother transition of the cooling medium in its gaseous state. There’s also talk of reduced air resistance and other special features that further refine the way this heat-dissipation technology works from inside the device.
The chambers are specially designed for highly efficient heat dissipation
It’s also worth mentioning the implementation of the so-called Tesla valve. It allows the liquid to pass through the evaporator while simultaneously blocking the gas from moving in the wrong direction.
So, the Tesla valve essentially enables higher efficiency of gas—i.e., fluid—circulation throughout the entire system. As an example, they modified a smartphone Xiaomi MIX 4 and replaced its original cooling chamber with the new Loop LiquidCool Technology.
The test found that after 30 minutes of playing Genshin Impact at 60 frames per second and the highest possible graphics settings, a newer cooling type delivered a temperature up to 8.6 °C lower than the chamber used before. The temperature reportedly didn’t rise above 47.7 °C. We’ll see if this new liquid-cooling approach works just as well in real-world conditions. We’re pretty sure it will.
