Real die-hard fans of Xiaomi know that the very first „product“ from the manufacturer was the user interface add-on MIUI. Since 2010, it has gone through incredible development, and this year we fairly early got to see the introduction of a new generation – MIUI 12.
The manufacturer officially named its newest software as: „A dreamt-up work of the tenth anniversary“, which is connected to the celebration of 10. brand anniversary.
These are all the latest features that were presented just a little while ago during the official live broadcast.
New revamped animations
The foundation of the latest MIUI 12 interface layer is built on Android 10, which will be included in the update for several newer smartphones. Xiaomi started by introducing brand-new animations that, however, look very similar to those from American iOS.
Xiaomi, though, took it even further. Transitions between apps, or between an app and the home screen, are now unbelievably smooth, and the animations are truly revamped.
During a transition, there’s sort of a layering effect, where the app itself splits into layers, and the animation gradually closes it.
Developers state that the app icon simulates a physical curve in three-dimensional space and represents smooth and even interruptible movement through physical space.
The screen rotation itself also has a flawless animation between horizontal and vertical orientation. See the video above.
Detailed animations were also added to the icons of built-in apps, such as Documents or the file browser. When closing, the app basically “wraps” itself into the icon—the end result looks unbelievably good.
New animations were applied to many places across the system, including even the smallest icons, for example in Settings. This makes the system feel much more intuitive and treats your eyes.
Speaking of those animations, the Weather app also got a new look—it now displays animations based on the weather. If it’s rainy, you’ll see a rain animation; if it’s sunny, the sun will “shine” on your screen.
The lock screen received beautiful dynamic animations, where the background smoothly switches to the home screen as you unlock. The effect is really pleasing to the eye.
Revamped multitasking
MIUI 12 comes with much more refined multitasking. As you can see in the image below, you can now create a smaller window for virtually any app in the system and use it even while you’re using another app.
Dark Mode 2.0
Another big MIUI 12 update is Dark Mode 2.0. The new dark mode can adapt a larger set of colors and can also work with color contrast and brightness—something that wasn’t possible until now.
The dark mode 2.0 can recognize every element and text within the interface more accurately. That means it’s not just a color inversion—it’s the adaptation of each element individually regardless of its shade.
Recognizing the surrounding light will result in adjusting the contrast and the text itself. If that’s not enough, the new dark mode can also change the font size and weight for optimal readability.
This way, in bright light it will enlarge and thicken the text, while in low light it will automatically make it thinner and smaller.
Perhaps the biggest new feature is the global dark mode, which can switch third-party apps to dark mode too—even those that don’t support this mode by default.
More than 1 000 new animations for Always-on Display
Among the other updates is the integration of more than 1,000 new wallpapers and animations for the Always On Display feature.
New Always On Display settings in MIUI 12 let you customize the look—so you can choose which element will be shown and which won’t.
More security and privacy protection
Xiaomi takes privacy and security seriously. In MIUI 12, it introduces a set of security measures called MACE (Mobile AI Compute Engine). Their job is to protect user data.
This is an open-source framework for mobile devices that can perform certain tasks in offline mode without uploading data to servers. That ensures maximum privacy for you, because the computations are done right on the smartphone and aren’t unnecessarily sent to servers.
Now you can even check what personal data Xiaomi collects using your devices or services.
Official list of devices
Along with the new MIUI 12 features, the manufacturer also announced the official list of supported devices, including update dates.
The first wave of updates will begin as early as the end of June, with the whole process split into three phases. In the first wave, it will only be a closed beta version of the overlay, and you’ll need to sign up.
This phase is meant for testers, so Xiaomi can spot all the bugs in the system.

It should be noted that these dates correspond to the Chinese version of MIUI 12. What matters to us is the release date of the global version, which we don’t know yet.
