A new location for 10 000 employees
The new headquarters, called Xiaomi Wuhan HQ, will be home to up to 10,000 employees. It will bring together people responsible for many of the Chinese tech giant’s development areas, including AI and IoT engineers, Mi Cloud, e-commerce managers, and people from the finance sector.
The new headquarters will be split into two main parts. The orange section is an office area, the blue section is for a buffet and exhibitions. The main building has an area of 27 000 square meters, is 35 meters tall, and has 7 floors. The secondary building is 13 meters tall and has an area of 3600 square meters. The company’s move will begin at the end of the year, when the new headquarters is expected to be fully ready.
Chinese Silicon Valley
Why Wuhan? Wuhan City is ideal for a research and development center because it has a convenient location in central China, and thanks to high-quality universities in the region, it also has strong potential for attracting new young talent.
Choosing this location may also be related to the founder of the Xiaomi brand, Lei Jun, who comes from there and wants to bring things back to the “home country.” People in Wuhan also call the city China’s Silicon Valley, because it’s home to many tech giants.
Since the new headquarters in Wuhan is quite far from the original one in Beijing, Xiaomi wants to motivate its employees to relocate for work. It will offer salaries at the level of the capital city of Beijing, relocation benefits, and bonuses. In return, it asks all employees to stay with the company for at least two years.
