Redmi K40 series smartphones drew a lot of attention right from the start. As usual, they offer plenty of features for not much money. However, there’s one thing that’s at least interesting. Despite having AMOLED displays, they don’t have a fingerprint sensor in the display. So why is that?
Redmi K40: AMOLED display without a fingerprint sensor
To start with, remember that all three models feature a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1400 x 1080 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a maximum brightness of 1300 nits. Since these are AMOLED panels, we’d expect a fingerprint sensor built in. But it’s not there.
Xiaomi explains this step by saying that the standard fingerprint sensor is faster compared to the one under the display. Of course, we agree with this claim. Right now, we have two types of in-display sensors – ultrasonic (used by flagship Samsung models) and optical, which are used by all other models.
The side fingerprint sensor is faster than the one in the display
The manufacturer even had its own study prepared, and the result was that the most ideal place to place this component is the side of the smartphone. Yes, there are many users who like having a fingerprint sensor on the side—no doubt about it.
From the editors’ experience, we can also say that sensors in the display are not only slower, but also less precise. Whether the manufacturer made the right move will be shown by time. Xiaomi also claims that the side sensor enables a more attractive design. We can’t agree with that, but this is purely a subjective matter.
The fingerprint sensor in the Redmi K40 offers extra features
The fingerprint sensor in the new Redmi K40 series models also comes with extra features. For example, you can use it when taking photos, where it serves as a shutter button. If the sensor were in the display or on the back, it would work worse in this mode.
Besides that, Redmi K40 series smartphones offer high performance, a 4520 mAh battery with 33 W charging, stereo speakers, and the latest operating system Android 11 with MIUI 12. Prices start at €253, and the most expensive version, the Redmi K40 Pro 12/256 GB, costs €469.
