The Xiaomi x Leica partnership is officially confirmed. They’re set to kick off a new era of mobile photography

Xiaomi has officially confirmed something today that has been rumored for a few months already. They publicly announced a collaboration with the photographic company Leica.

Officially confirmed

For several years, Leica has collaborated with a Chinese company, Huawei, where this connection helped push mobile photography one level higher.

We’re partnering with Xiaomi with this exact message. Last year, it managed to develop the smartphone Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, which is currently the world’s #2 in terms of camera equipment—according to the prestigious ranking from DxOMark.

Through this connection, they could also manage to secure even the first place. The first smartphone on which both brands will collaborate will be the long-awaited model Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

So it will be a long-term strategic collaboration aimed at creating a camera system for Xiaomi’s flagship models, so don’t expect to see the Leica logo on mid-range smartphones either.

The Ultra model in July

They also confirmed the information that the first model in the spirit of this connection will be the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, which should indeed be presented already in July.

A lot is expected from this model. But all the clues point to this model becoming the king of mobile photography. Still, there are competitors in the form of Apple and Samsung, whose smartphones also produce great photos.

Besides Huawei, Leica has also collaborated with companies like Sharp or Panasonic. In the mobile world, such collaborations are common—after all, OnePlus works with Hasselblad and, for example in the past, Nokia had a partnership with Zeiss.

What we know so far

We already know the model’s design thanks to leaked protective cases. On the front, there should be a 6.73-inch OLED display with 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. At the same time, it should be a 2nd-gen LTPO panel.

The battery will have a capacity of 4 900 mAh, and Xiaomi will round it out with 120-watt wired charging and 50-watt wireless charging. The entire build will be water-resistant according to IP68 certification.
