RAMDISK is a new technology from Xiaomi that uses system RAM as internal storage

A few days ago, Xiaomi revealed one of the most impressive software developments called RAMDISK. So far, it’s integrated only into its latest model, Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra.

Thanks to compressing the RAM’s high-speed memory type LPDDR5 , you can then use this memory as internal storage.

A technological breakthrough from Xiaomi

The new feature called RAMDISK lets you take advantage of the high read and write speed offered by system RAM type LPDDR5 .

While this type of RAM reaches speeds up to 44 GB/s, the UFS 3.1 internal storage in the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra doesn’t exceed 1.7 GB/s for reading and 0.75 GB/s for writing. That’s a huge speed jump, considering this is the latest type of internal storage.

Xiaomi developed RAMDISK technology primarily to enable fast installation and loading of apps or games, directly in the RAM. This not only achieves higher installation speeds, but also faster loading of any downloaded content.

Lightning-fast

In addition to explaining how this technology works and demonstrating it, Xiaomi also pointed out the noticeable time savings. Thanks to RAMDISK, it is possible to save 40 – 60% of app loading and installation time compared with the smartphone's internal storage.

To speed everything up and save the user time, RAMDISK reserves roughly half of the system RAM for installing apps and games.

Uninstalling apps or games using RAMDISK technology is instant thanks to the data stored in system RAM. The same applies when installing new apps / games. In a traditional internal drive, this would take minutes, while RAM completes it in just a few seconds.

Data stored in RAM will remain only until the device is powered off or restarted. After restarting or shutting down the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, all apps or games installed using this technology will be completely removed.

The technology is currently available only in the latest MIUI 12 on the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra. However, you can still expect that Xiaomi’s other flagship smartphones will get the same functionality too—of course, only if they have LPDDR5 RAM.
