Awesome: Xiaomi shows off the third generation of under-display camera technology in a video

We can say that as of today, Xiaomi “has rewritten the history” of selfie cameras in smartphones. The company CEO unveiled a fully functional prototype of an under-display selfie camera, whose quality matches that of regular selfie cameras.

Since ZTE is planning a similar debut in the near future, Xiaomi couldn’t afford to wait and ultimately beat ZTE itself. So after years of waiting, we can finally look forward to a beautiful full-screen experience without any compromises.

Already the third generation of this prototype

The development of an under-display selfie camera began under Xiaomi’s wing back in June 2019. At the time, the desired effect was achieved by reducing the pixel density of the display above the lens, but both the display and the photos were noticeably affected.

Today, the company’s CEO unveiled a functional prototype of an under-display selfie camera. However, instead of reducing pixel density, it now uses technology developed by the Chinese giant itself, which adjusts the arrangement of pixels on the display.

In the first image, you can see a classic cutout and a cluster of four pixels. The second shot shows how the previous prototypes worked in principle (skipping 3 pixels – reducing density), and the last one reveals the modified pixel arrangement.

This hot new update was also shared by the well-known insider and leaker Ice universe on his Twitter account. There’s also a video comparing the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra with the cutout, and likely the same—just modified—smartphone.

The difference in photo quality is clear

According to the manufacturer, the final photo quality should be the same as with a normal selfie camera in a cutout. The manufacturer also slightly adjusted the material around the camera so that more light can reach the sensor.

Naturally, this technological breakthrough makes us very happy. We’ve been waiting for this moment since the technology was patented, and more than a year later we now have a fully functional prototype, tuned down to the last detail.

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, plans to bring smartphones using this under-display selfie camera technology to the market within 2021. Until then, we just have to wait and look forward to the arrival of, for many people, truly revolutionary technology.
