Xiaomi explains: This is how the front cameras placed under the display will work

The company Xiaomi plans a range of new products, including futuristic concepts such as the smartphone Mi MIX ALPHA. The great news is also the option to place the front camera under the display, i.e., a feature that will certainly be considered again in the future.

This time, we bring you an explanation directly from the Xiaomi ecosystem about how the above-mentioned technology works.

Wide angle and practical use

A new patent on a technology that could potentially appear, for example, in a smartphone Mi MIX 4. brought more light to the issue. It is a patent titled „Display Structure and Electronic Equipment“, which shows how the technology itself works, as well as how it’s possible that the display does not prevent light from passing through to the front camera lens.

This is how Xiaomi envisions the concept of the new technology.

The technology can control each individual pixel located beneath the image sensor. This makes it possible to completely turn off these pixels, i.e., disable them and make them practically transparent. That’s the path by which the necessary light reaches the camera lens.

As we can also see in the patent sketches, Xiaomi’s concept will offer a sufficiently wide viewing angle, allowing it to implement an ultra-wide selfie camera as well. Once it finishes its task, the camera is deactivated and the pixels are re-enabled.

This way, the user can continue to benefit from a full-featured display without cutouts or other mechanical camera solutions that could wear down with heavy use.

A display without cutouts or a mechanical camera module

We’re curious whether the new technology will reach the market in the near term in some of the upcoming Xiaomi devices. More information could be available at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2020, taking place in the first quarter of next year in traditionally sunny Barcelona, Spain.
