The company Xiaomi has introduced a new generation of its fitness band not only in the Chinese version, but already in a global version as well. It’s called Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 and brings several hardware and software upgrades at once.

The band was first unveiled in China under the name Mi Band 5. This version even includes a smart assistant, XiaoAI, and NFC chip payments designed exclusively for China. 15. July 2020, however, saw a European presentation of the global version, which will carry the Mi Smart Band 5 name.

In the editorial office, we decided to test this fitness band so we can evaluate for ourselves what features it truly offers.

We pre-ordered the fitness band Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5 directly from the Slovak official distributor. Through the Alza.sk e-shop, the product was delivered to our local branch in just two calendar days. Official distribution, however, required a higher amount, specifically €54.90.

Technical specifications: Hardware and software upgrades

The new fitness band’s dimensions are capped at 47,2 x 18,5 x 12,4 mm, with the standard version (without NFC) weighing 11,9 grams. The NFC version then adds another negligible two grams.

The Mi Smart Band 5 brings several hardware upgrades over the previous fourth generation. The device body itself has also been updated—this time it features a larger, up to 1.1″ AMOLED display with rounded corners. AMOLED offers excellent brightness up to 450 nits and a resolution of 126 x 294 pixels.

With the upgrade, you also get the PPG heart-rate sensing sensor, located on the back. It offers nonstop heart-rate and sleep monitoring, while being improved compared to the previous generation by up to 50%.

A new feature is also up to 11 sports activity modes. Specifically: treadmill, free-style exercise, outdoor running, cycling, walking, swimming, yoga, a rowing machine, a stationary bike, and an elliptical trainer. On the software side, there’s also menstrual cycle monitoring directly in the Mi Fit app.

The battery included has a capacity of 125 mAh. According to the manufacturer’s data, the battery life on a single charge should be around 14 days. There should be a total of 6 color versions on the market. Mi Band 4 / 5 bands are not compatible with each other.
