The race to create the charger with the highest possible power output continues. In November 2019, we saw charging technology from Xiaomi with an output of up to 100 W.
That said, this Chinese giant is definitely not the only one trying to break records. After all, a video has appeared showing a 120 W adapter right away.
Attempts have also been recorded from other companies
Rival Oppo has already implemented 65 W SuperVOOC technology, which charges a smartphone in record time. Chinese Lenovo will most likely also introduce a fast charging variant with power of 90 W for its Legion lineup.
In short, several manufacturers are busy creating fast charging solutions.
Let’s get back, though, to the mentioned 100 W charging from Xiaomi. The latest leaked images show that it will be an adapter with voltage of 20 V and current of 5 A. Power, however, can increase to an impressive 120 W, since the current can be pulled up to 6 A.
So it’s truly a high-performance charger. The question, however, is whether in the near future there will be a smartphone model that will support such a strong adapter at all.
The video shows a genuinely massive, 120 W charger
A video itself has also surfaced online, showing this extremely large—and probably quite heavy—120 W charger with a US connector.
The image is essentially a screenshot from these fast shots. This particular unit supports charging with values 20V / 6A, 20V / 5A and 11V / 6A.
On the other hand, it’s impossible to reliably determine whether the charger is actually real. Since Xiaomi has already officially unveiled its 100 W charging technology, it can’t be completely ruled out that there is a 120 W adapter for a smartphone that supports this ultra-fast charging.
Another question is whether this adapter will be usable, for example, with upcoming laptops from the Redmibook line, or whether it’s only a charger intended specifically for the soon-to-be released smartphone models.
What do you think about such extremely powerful chargers? Will smartphones that support these charging types see success at all? Fast charging can do more harm to battery lifespan, but on the other hand the smartphone charges in just a few minutes, which can genuinely come in handy in some situations.
