Xiaomi is tirelessly working on upgraded versions of its flagship phones with an added S. Here’s the most important change of all—the chipset that will be used.
Will MediaTek make it into the flagship phone?
A link appeared in Mi Code suggesting that the Xiaomi 12S Pro shouldn’t have a Qualcomm chipset inside. Specifically, it should be the Dimensity 9000 model.
That’s quite an interesting piece of news, and this model would become Xiaomi’s first flagship smartphone featuring a MediaTek chipset.
There’s nothing surprising about it, because MediaTek is advancing by leaps and bounds and can already compete strongly even with the best Qualcomm chipsets.
The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset can also be found in the Redmi K50 Pro, one of the most powerful chipsets ever—something also confirmed by the prestigious benchmark AnTuTu.
Several new code names were added to Mi Code. The device with the code name damuier is the same as the device with the code name L2M—that’s the Xiaomi 12S Pro with the Dimensity 9000 chipset.
The original information suggested that the refreshed S models would be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset. However, due to the pandemic in China, it has been pushed back to an unspecified date during the second half of this year.
It’s not yet clear which chipset the Xiaomi 12S model will be equipped with. It could be any Qualcomm chipset, or again, a MediaTek surprise.
When will we get it?
The Xiaomi 12S series is licensed until June 22, and the Xiaomi 12S Pro with the Dimensity 9000 processor has a license until July 22. We think the launch date for this series could fall in the second week of August. However, it’s very likely that devices from the Xiaomi 12S series will be available only in their home country, China.
