Xiaomi EV has taken another major step in its global expansion. On September 25, 2025, it officially opened its new R&D and Design Center in Munich, which is the very first facility of this kind outside China.

This milestone clearly shows that Xiaomi is serious about Europe with its electric vehicles and is laying the groundwork for entry into a demanding market planned for 2027.

Why Munich?

The German city of Munich is among the leading hubs for Central European automotive engineering and design. Xiaomi has therefore chosen the ideal location to fully leverage local know-how, talented engineers, and synergies with research institutions. The new center will focus on developing electric drivetrains, intelligent driving control, vehicle dynamics, and innovative design for a global audience.

On top of that, Xiaomi in Germany has already gained recognition in motorsport — it became part of the prestigious “Industriepool” program at the Nürburgring race track and even has its own curve on the track called “Xiaomi Curve”.

Investment in talent and collaboration

The new center will bring opportunities for local engineers, designers, and researchers, who will work closely with the global teams at Xiaomi EV. The company also announced that it will develop partnerships with universities, technology institutes, and other players in the automotive industry. The goal is to accelerate innovation in autonomous driving, EV platforms, and the next-generation user experience.

Another interesting point is the open approach to ethical questions in artificial intelligence and the infrastructure that Xiaomi plans to address within its ecosystem “Human x Car x Home”.

Preparing to enter Europe

After the successful launch of the models Xiaomi SU7, SU7 Ultra, and YU7 in China, the automaker is getting ready for its European debut. Right now, it’s building the foundation so that its vehicles meet the strictest European quality and safety standards. President Xiaomi, William Lu, already confirmed in August 2025 that the first sales in the European market will begin in 2027.

Xiaomi EV therefore doesn’t want to be just a Chinese brand, but a true global leader in the era of intelligent mobility. That’s why the European R&D center is an important part of this entire strategy.
