Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is preparing to expand into the world of electric mobility, including within the European market. It officially took the first step by registering its electric vehicle SU7 Ultra in Germany.

According to available information, this model is part of the preparations for the brand’s planned entry into the European market, which should take place in 2027.

First registration in Germany as a preparation for year 2027

The company’s chairman, William Lu, shared a photo of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra vehicle on the Chinese social network Weibo, which has already received German license plates “M SU7088E”. At the same time, he revealed that he personally tested the electric car on German roads in Munich. This move clearly signals Xiaomi’s serious intentions to establish itself in the automotive industry beyond China.

Xiaomi plans a personal European mission

William Lu doesn’t hide the fact that he plans to travel across several European countries, during which he wants to directly assess the potential of Chinese electric cars in individual markets. Earlier this year, he already said the Xiaomi EV brand plans to export its vehicles to Europe starting from 2027.

These words were later confirmed by the company’s founder and CEO Lei Jun himself. However, according to his statement, Xiaomi will first focus on its domestic Chinese customers, while expansion abroad will come in a further phase.

Xiaomi SU7 exceeds expectations

In China, the Xiaomi SU7 model is already attracting extraordinary interest at home. It was unveiled in March 2024 and immediately ranked among Tesla Model 3’s strong competitors. With monthly sales above 20 000 units and a waiting time of up to 41 weeks, it’s one of the most successful electric cars in the country.

Besides the SU7, the newly unveiled SUV version called YU7 also caught attention. It literally shook up the automotive market when, just a few minutes after its official launch, it recorded more than 200,000 reservations. That’s clear proof that Xiaomi takes electric mobility seriously and knows how to capture customers’ interest.

Production so far only in Beijing

Currently, Xiaomi has just one manufacturing plant available, located in China’s capital—Beijing. Its annual capacity is set at 150 000 vehicles. However, the company is already preparing plans to expand production so it can keep up with rising demand and get ready for the demanding European market.

If the planned entry into the European market in 2027 goes through, we can also expect further expansion phases, including localized production. That would bring benefits such as shorter delivery times, lower costs, and better customer support across the EU.
