Xiaomi blocks the installation of Google apps on its smartphones. Which models will it affect?

Even though Xiaomi uses its own interface MIUI, which basically covers the Android operating system, system updates are handled very well by the manufacturer. After Google releases a new version of our favorite mobile operating system, Xiaomi can quickly adapt to the changes and fine-tune the software specifically for this graphical skin.

This kind of cooperation with Google may not be a given in the future. Some models, after all, lost Google services in China.

We won’t install Google services on Xiaomi smartphones for China anymore.

You’ve probably recently heard about the possible disputes between Xiaomi and the US. Something similar is also happening to Huawei, but in a much more radical form.

This could be the reason why Xiaomi is now blocking the installation of Google Mobile Services, or shortened to GMS, on its smartphones. That’s why you might be wondering whether you should worry about something, too.

We’ll tell you right away that you definitely don’t need to be afraid. This only affects users in China, or those who have the Chinese MIUI firmware. These restrictions start with the rollout of the new MIUI 12.5 interface version in the home country.

The company noted that devices that don’t come from the start—i.e., those that didn’t have preinstalled Google services—will not be able to have them installed at all. This applies to Chinese versions of Xiaomi smartphones. Until now, installation was possible and rather straightforward—even less experienced users could handle it.

The only way to install Google apps on the Chinese version of Xiaomi smartphones will be to install a modified ROM from Xiaomi.EU that includes them. If in the future you’re planning to buy such a Xiaomi smartphone, you should keep that in mind.

Some devices are already missing Google apps

Xiaomi hasn’t released any list of affected models, but some users report that the Redmi K30 Ultra and Redmi 10X 5G smartphones are among those that now don’t support services from the US tech giant Google.

As we mentioned, this information applies only to China, but it’s definitely worth noting because we can’t know how the dispute between Xiaomi and the USA will develop in the future.

Xiaomi Mi 11 with still working Google apps

In the end, even smartphone owners in China don’t necessarily have to care about the absence of anything from Google. But we certainly don’t want what happened with the competing Huawei to happen to our favorite brand. So if you’re buying a new smartphone with this manufacturer’s logo, don’t worry at all.

You don’t have to worry at all either if you already own a Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone. Only time can decide the climax of the upcoming story.
