Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 5: New magnetic charging

In its fifth generation, the band labeled Mi Smart Band 5 brings a magnetic charging system. This new design replaces the bulky charging method where you had to remove the strap and charge only the device itself.

In addition, Xiaomi confirmed that the screen size will increase. As previous leaks suggested, the display diagonal will grow by 20%—from the original 0.95″ to 1.1″.

It’s still a high-quality AMOLED panel with up to 450 nits brightness and a resolution of 126 x 294 pixels. As for battery life, the new Mi Band 5 should deliver up to 14 days on a single charge. It’s powered by a solid 125 mAh battery.

Upgraded heart-rate sensor and 11 sports modes

The 5th generation in the package also brings a new heart rate sensor, which is also used in the professional field. This PPG sensor will ensure a much more accurate system for monitoring biological parameters.

Another new feature is up to 11 sports activity modes. Specifically: treadmill, free style workout, outdoor running, cycling, walking, swimming, yoga, rowing machine, stationary bike, and elliptical trainer.

Other updates include the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 adding smartphone camera remote control, a new menstrual cycle monitoring mode, and improved multi-function NFC sensor support—something that could also appear outside China, following the enhanced predecessor Mi Band 4.

More color versions

After the first images of the upcoming band were released, we already knew the design details as well as the look of some color versions. Now we also know that besides the classic black color, you can look forward to yellow, orange, and green.

The official reveal also showed a light pink, dark blue, and brown version. In principle, it’s still the same band with a different interchangeable strap.

The dimensions of the new smart bracelet are 47,2 x 18,5 x 12,4 mm, with the standard version weighing 11,9 grams and the NFC version weighing 12,1 g.

Increasing the display within the same physical dimensions also brings smaller bezels, but it’s also a practical upgrade. From the images, you can see that the new model will offer much more information on the watch face—and the manufacturer really tried to use every millimeter of the larger display.

In summary, we can mainly talk about functional and practical improvements of the new generation—such as a smart assistant, magnetic charging, and new monitoring modes.

However, from the design perspective, apart from the larger display, it’s a very similar band compared to the Mi Band 4 version.
