Chinese maker Xiaomi continues tweaking its MIUI software skin and adds another feature from Google. This time, the changes affect the app that regularly offers updates in your smartphone’s settings.
The Updates app is changing. It will be from Google
What seemed special when updating your smartphone Redmi Note 8 Pro will probably become the new norm. Xiaomi has obviously decided to drop its own updates app and replace it with Google’s.
A debate has already kicked off on the Mi Community forums specifically around the aforementioned news. The new Google app is becoming part of the system following the update to version MIUI 12.5 (global ROM). At first, however, it looked like it would be exclusive to some devices only, such as the Note 8 Pro, where the new app appeared first.
After the update arrived in version 12.5, the change was also confirmed by an MIUIes source. In this way, Xiaomi replaced its original app for showing updates. This change should apply to all devices that use the stable global ROM.
The update scheduling policy will remain untouched
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such a swap. In the past, we could witness the exchange of the Phone or Messages app, which in the global version of Xiaomi’s skin was also replaced with Google alternatives.
As for the updates app, changes have so far been recorded on Redmi Note 8 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 smartphones. However, it’s expected that the same fate will befall the original app on other devices as well. On our editorial Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G device, we still have the older Xiaomi app:
The manufacturer emphasizes that the main reason for this change is improved update downloading thanks to changes on the server where those files are hosted. However, the change won’t affect the OTA update scheduling policy, which will continue to be distributed according to the existing schedule across both old and new app environments.
