If we look at how charging speed has evolved over the past few years, we’ll see that the maximum charging power is growing at truly rocket speed. A few years ago, we enthusiastically celebrated 10 W “fast charging”—now this value is hardly acceptable as a minimum for most of us.
Pressure to speed up charging is driven mainly by the ever-increasing battery capacity in smartphones. The latest speculation points to ultra-fast charging in the new, expected Xiaomi MIX 5.
200 W charging in Xiaomi MIX 5
In the second half of this year, the world was introduced to an innovative smartphone in many respects—Xiaomi MIX 4. Its biggest draw, perhaps, was the hidden selfie camera, which meant the display wasn’t interrupted by any elements like a cutout or a notch.
The MIX 4 model offers 120 W charging, which ultimately lets you charge from 0 to 100 % in less than 15 minutes. The developers and engineers decided to raise the bar a bit higher with the Xiaomi MIX 5.
Based on the currently available information, Xiaomi MIX 5 will deliver up to an unbelievable 200 W charging. The time it takes to charge the smartphone from 0 to 100% is about 8 minutes. Most of us also don’t charge the phone all the way down to zero, so charging from 20–30% will be extremely fast.
On the other hand, anyone who thinks even a little about such an unbelievable performance will come to the conclusion that it probably isn’t the most optimal solution for battery longevity. Although Xiaomi has already managed to show off a newly redesigned heat-dissipation system, we still don’t know how big an impact this kind of high-power charging will have on battery capacity degradation.
