Xiaomi is working on two new smartphones with clean Android and an in-display fingerprint sensor

Xiaomi’s MIUI add-on has a lot of fans, but also its critics. It’s been quite a while now since Xiaomi introduced its first model based on the Android One platform — the Xiaomi Mi A1. It delivers a real experience of clean Android, similar to Google’s Pixel smartphones.

Information about possible successors to last year’s Android One Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite models has now appeared online.

Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite?

Information about Xiaomi’s new Android One models was brought by the XDA Developers portal. One of its members found that Xiaomi has started testing the hardware of three new models, two of which should come with the Android One platform.

Mi A2 Lite with Android One

The code names of the discovered models are “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout” and “cosmos_sprout”. The addition sprout in the names suggests the presence of Android One, since every such device is registered on Google’s official site exactly with this “sprout” addition in the code name.

Smartphones with the identifiers „bamboo_sprout“ and „cosmos_sprout“ should be the Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite, while „pyxis“ will be the Chinese version of the Mi A3. It was the same with previous models too — the i 5X is the Chinese version of the Mi A1, and the Mi 6X is for the Mi A2. Based on this philosophy, the smartphone with the identifier „pyxis“ could therefore be called Mi 9X.

An in-display fingerprint scanner in the mid-range?

The hardware testing also revealed that all three smartphones come with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Until now, this feature was only reserved for flagship devices or higher-end smartphones. It looks like Xiaomi wants to change that.

In-display fingerprint scanner – Mi 9 SE

Since the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor supports only the Snapdragon 855 chipset and more expensive OLED displays, we expect Xiaomi’s mid-range updates to get optical in-display fingerprint sensors.

Other specs are currently unknown

Unfortunately, in the information known so far there are no details about the further hardware of the “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout” and “cosmos_sprout” models. However, you can make a logical deduction. Xiaomi has recently really taken a liking to the Snapdragon 660 chipset, which they implement into budget smartphones. This chipset could replace Snapdragon 625 (in the Mi A2 Lite) and also make it into the Mi A3 Lite.

Since Mi A2 is equipped with a Snapdragon 660, in Mi A3 we could see a Snapdragon 675, or possibly a Snapdragon 710. But for now, all of this is just speculation. As soon as we learn more, you’ll know about it among the first.
