Xiaomi has achieved impressive growth in the smartphone market. It may soon surpass Samsung and Apple

Our favorite Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has delivered great growth. It could even overtake giants like American Apple and South Korean Samsung.

Xiaomi and the defeat of Samsung and Apple—just a matter of time?

The latest information published by IDC reports smartphone sales for the second quarter of 2024. And it’s good news. The mobile market is waking up and has been growing for the fourth quarter in a row. Total smartphone sales increased by 6.5%, which translates into a total of 285 million smartphones sold.

The current ranking speaks clearly. Samsung holds the top spot, followed by the popular American brand Apple. What really stands out is the third place, taken by Xiaomi, with truly exceptional growth that is starting to put even the big leaders in this ranking at risk.

Samsung’s first place in the current ranking points to a market share of 19.8%. Next comes Apple with 15.8%. Third is Xiaomi, hot on its heels, posting 14.8%—and Chinese brands aren’t letting up either at fourth and fifth. That’s Vivo with 9.1%, and Oppo, which has an even 9%.

If we look exclusively at market shares, it may seem like Xiaomi still has a long way to go before it can take the throne. But the key metric is year-over-year growth. While the leaders of the chart, Samsung and Apple, saw an increase of 0.7% and 1.5%, respectively, the Chinese company Xiaomi is growing by as much as 27.4%!

If this growth rate continues, the first place in the ranking could be a question of just the next two or three quarters for Xiaomi. However, it’s also important to watch the Vivo brand, which also recorded strong year-over-year growth of up to 21.9%.

Different price categories and the launch of Apple iPhone 16 new series

IDC sees a significant difference mainly in different price segments. The premium smartphone category is led by Samsung and Apple, bringing these companies higher profits. In the mid-range and affordable segments, Chinese brands have a stronger presence, and their shipment growth is also faster.

Of course, the premium device segment is smaller when it comes to sales numbers. However, brands like Xiaomi or Vivo are growing at such a strong pace that it definitely isn’t only due to packed flagship models—but especially thanks to well-balanced devices in the mid-range and entry-level segments.

Let’s not forget there are a few other key factors. Xiaomi needs to increase the number of units it ships, where it is currently falling significantly behind. With 33 million shipped units so far, it can’t yet compare to Samsung, which shipped 53 million smartphones.

Apple then shipped 44.5 million, but it’s worth remembering that the launch of the iPhone 16 series is still ahead, so this number will definitely rise in the following quarters.
