Xiaomi is working on a charging revolution for smartphones. All you need is sunlight

Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co., Ltd. has recently filed a patent titled Solar charging method, device, device and memory medium. In short, it’s about solar charging for a smartphone.

If we look at the abstract of the published patent, we learn that the process starts by obtaining the intensity of sunlight in the immediate environment where the end device is located, which is achieved by using a sophisticated light detection module.

When the intensity of sunlight meets predefined conditions, a mechanism for a variable state of the back cover comes into play, allowing the sunlight to penetrate and illuminate the solar energy harvesting module.

The patent presents the concept of a module that converts solar energy into electrical energy. This converted electrical energy is then used to charge the device’s battery.

Xiaomi has apparently created a case with a solar panel that detects the amount of sunlight around it, and when there’s enough, it opens. This is how it starts storing energy in the energy-capturing module.

Overall, it means that by harnessing the power of the sun, Xiaomi’s technology enables end devices to use solar energy as a viable and accessible charging option.

Xiaomi is constantly moving forward

Releasing this patent signals Xiaomi’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, setting a positive example for other companies in this industry. The patent also demonstrates Xiaomi’s technical capabilities.

Just to clarify, this plan goes all the way to 2018, when Xiaomi patented a charging panel using renewable energy—so this could be an evolution of that earlier patent.

So it’s quite likely that in the future, with Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones, we could see integrated small solar panels. It’s not just about smartphones—the patent could also be used by the Chinese giant in home devices or as part of its electric car project.
