One of the first YouTube video reviews of the Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Studio: a walkie-talkie in the mirror, a 30-inch cinema, and a rooftop bed

Quick summary

  • The first in-depth video review of the Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max Studio was published by the Telescope channel, which tested the car both stationary and on the road.
  • Despite the retractable roof, the reviewer says the impact on noise is minimal—when driving alongside a regular N90 Max, you can only hear a bit more wind noise.
  • The Studio has two beds—one downstairs in the cabin and the other in the roof—and together, four people can sleep in it.
  • The ceiling display has been replaced with a 30-inch projection screen. In direct sunlight, a standard screen beats it, but in the evening it’s the other way around.
  • The price in China is 299,900 yuan (about €38,600). The first units start being delivered in November and December.

Xiaomi introduced the SkyNomad N90 Max Studo two days ago, and the first proper video review is already out. It was filmed by the Telescope channel, which has long focused on the Chinese market and has already tested the regular N90 version both stationary and on the road. The Studio is the version with a electrically retractable roof, where a second sleeping level is created.

In the very beginning, the reviewer admits that he originally planned to film for half an hour, but ended up making it into a separate video instead. We’ve listed the complete specs, prices, and equipment in the separate article about the introduction; here, we’ll walk you through what real testing showed.

Full video review

The video is under ten minutes long, and besides a stationary walkthrough, it also includes shots from driving alongside the regular N90 Max. If you don’t understand English, turn on automatic captions with translation.

The roof is surprisingly quiet

The first question the reviewer asked was a logical one: such a complex mechanism on the roof must inevitably affect noise and vibrations—an automotive parameter that’s usually abbreviated as NVH. As an example, he mentioned the plug-in hybrid Ford Bronco, which has a much simpler roof solution, and it still leaks.

When driving alternately in the Studio and the white N90 Max, he found that the difference is truly small. From above you can hear a little more wind, but it’s not really a sound leak—more like the awareness that there’s something extra up there. According to him, it’s a better solution than 99% of add-on roof racks, and if he hadn’t known about the roof in advance, he wouldn’t have registered the difference.

Instead of the ceiling display: a 30-inch screen

The second big difference versus the standard N90 Max is the entertainment in the back. The Studio doesn’t have the ceiling-mounted 21-inch screen, but a 30-inch projection system, which in China costs 10,000 yuan (about €1,300) extra. The seats move on long rails, so the reviewer slid the second row all the way back toward the trunk for a comfortable distance and viewing angle.

The main weakness of a car projector is clear. The test took place shortly after 3 p.m., the car was parked with its front facing the sun—so it was practically the worst possible scenario. Even so, the picture was usable, although in this kind of light a regular screen would win. In any other weather and especially in the evening, according to the reviewer, the screen has the upper hand just because it’s bigger by that much.

First bed: two taps and the seat turns into a bed

The Studio isn’t a seven-seater like the N90 Max, but a five-seater without a third row — which feels odd given the 5.28 m length until you see why. With two taps on the display, the seat moves forward, the headrest retracts, and the rear edge of the seat lifts up. Within a few dozen seconds, it turns into a flat bed that a 180 cm reviewer fit into without any trouble.

Around the bed, you’ll find storage directly built into the sides, a cosmetic mirror with soft ring light, a dedicated light, air-conditioning vents, and floor heating. The only thing the reviewer had a complaint about was the accompanying music, which plays a bit too loud during the seat transformation. You can turn it down with the wheel on the steering wheel.

The second bed is on the roof and has its own climate control

The roof slides out by holding one button; once you release it, the mechanism stops. You get up there through the first or second row of seats, and it literally becomes the second deck of the car. When you pull down the roof window blind over the first row, it becomes part of the bed.

The walls are made of two-layer mesh, so air flows in, but mosquitoes stay out. There’s a dedicated light overhead, an air-conditioning vent connected to the car’s system, and a USB-C port. The reviewer openly admitted that judging a tent on a car roof isn’t his area of expertise and that he hasn’t seen anything like it before. Together with the lower bed, four people can sleep in the Studio.

A walkie-talkie in the rearview mirror and a verdict

During the filming, the reviewer noticed a detail that was missed during the presentation: in the middle rear-view mirror, there is a walkie-talkie directly from Xiaomi mounted there, which draws power from it and is connected to the 4G network.

The conclusion is sober despite the excitement. The reviewer says he would still prefer a hotel room, but if he had to spend the night in a car, Studio is the only one he would consider. The price in China is 299,900 yuan, i.e. roughly €38,600. The first units will start being delivered in November and December. Xiaomi cars are coming to Europe only in 2027, so for now it’s a peek through the glass.
