March 28, 2024 will go down in Xiaomi history as a big day. Xiaomi’s first electric car, Xiaomi’s, has finally been officially presented. We know the color options, key technical specifications, and the sales prices of each configuration Xiaomi SU7. Of course, all the information applies to the domestic market, meaning the Chinese one.
The Xiaomi SU7 car is officially here—and it’s awesome
The press conference was kicked off by the project lead and the original co-founder of the Xiaomi brand, Lei Jun. He first assessed the work on the electric car itself—years of development—as well as the start of the company’s involvement in the automotive industry, which definitely wasn’t easy.
After that, we moved on to the vehicle reveal, which took place last month in Europe as well. Xiaomi SU7 was part of the popular Mobile World Congress 2024 exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. Jun called its presence at the event a big success. He also revealed that in the Chinese market there was real-world testing covering up to 5.4 million kilometers, supported by 576 vehicles.
9 color options and four tire sizes
The Chinese manufacturer then unveiled all the available color options. And while initially 6 combinations were expected, in the end you get 9 color options—five of which are metallic— including Radiant Purple, Meteor Blue, Lava Orange, Pearl White, and Basalt Grey.
The front end is dominated by specially shaped adaptive headlights that can adjust to surrounding traffic and conditions. Overall, they provide coverage of up to a 160° angle, with a maximum beam range of up to 400 meters. The setup also includes key wheel rims, which will be available in four designs and sizes 19″, 20″, and 21″, depending on the vehicle configuration.
The vehicle’s tires come from Michelin and Bridgestone. The lower configurations use the Bridgestone TURANZA 6 (19″), while the more expensive ones use Michelin Pilot Sport EV (20″) or Pirelli P ZERO (21″). Tire dimensions for the SU7 Max configuration are 24 / 40 / R20 in front or 245 / 35 / R21 up front, and 265 / 40 R20 or 265 / 35 R21 on the rear axle.
Panoramic roof, “frunk” and storage spaces
The interior features ergonomic seats made with certified, high-quality OEKO-TEX material. There will be four color options – Galaxy Gray, Twilight Red, Mist Purple, and Obsidian Black. The vehicle will offer an audio system with Dolby Atmos and 25 speakers, integrated also into the seats. There are also smart features, and for example, navigation can be announced only from the driver’s seat, without disturbing the other passengers.
The volume of the rear cargo space is 517 liters, with a loading-edge width of 1136 mm. Xiaomi SU7 also has a front “frunk”, i.e., a smaller storage compartment with a capacity of 105 liters, for smaller luggage or a charger. The stylish details also include a multifunction three-spoke steering wheel, a rotating display on the dashboard, and an unbelievable 56″ “Heads-up” display for showing navigation and driving information.
Xiaomi also thought about a special pair of connectors on the dashboard. This is for connecting original Xiaomi accessories, such as a mobile phone stand or a GoPro camera. Storage space is highlighted by a pair of cup holders between the front seats, as well as a compartment for placing a smartphone in the passenger door. There are also hidden hooks for luggage, plus an integrated manual battery that can also serve as a power bank.
Selected trims also include a 4.6-liter fridge for your drinks, placed in the center panel with an anti-slip base. Hidden storage spaces for up to a 14″ laptop are also included. A standout design feature is the stylish panoramic roof that stretches across the entire build, with dimensions of up to 5.35 m².
The latest round of extensive comparisons has brought Tesla Model 3 into the spotlight. According to Xiaomi, the Chinese car beats it in areas like a roomier interior, more legroom, and a lower interior temperature during testing on hot, sunny days. The interior also makes room for an umbrella, and as optional accessories the manufacturer offers a sun-light shield.
Uncompromising performance and a range of up to 800 kilometers on a single charge
The electric vehicle in the Xiaomi SU7 Max configuration can boast a maximum speed of up to 265 km/h, with acceleration from 0 to 100 in just 2,78 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in 10,67 seconds. In all cases, it also beats the competing Porsche Taycan Turbo model (specs 2022).
An integrated electric motor labeled V6s delivers up to 21 000 revolutions per minute and a maximum output of 495 kW, outperforming the Tesla Model 3 in its Performance version as well. Of course, such performance also calls for a high-quality braking system from Brembo. When braking from 100 km/h, you’ll come to a stop after only 33,3 meters.
Xiaomi also thinks about fans of dynamic driving, adding a BOOST mode that temporarily boosts the vehicle’s power to the maximum. The SU7 is meant to be fun, too, which is why you’ll also find a “Drift” mode in the equipment. It allows you to enable vehicle stabilization settings and lets you enjoy slides with a preference for the rear axle. All of this is supported by an active, dynamic rear spoiler.
Just as important is the vehicle’s range. Xiaomi claims up to 700 kilometers on a single charge (base configuration Xiaomi SU7, 19″ tires), based on CLTC certification measurements. Lei Jun, however, emphasized that the final figure depends mainly on driving speed and each user’s driving habits.
The Xiaomi SU7 Max version goes even further. With special Michelin “low-rolling” tires and aerodynamically efficient wheels, you can reach up to 810 km of range on a single charge (101 kWh CARL Kirin battery). The vehicle also stands out thanks to fast charging.
With a 486-volt SiC charger, you’ll reach 138 kilometers in just 5 minutes of charging, and 350 kilometers in 15 minutes of charging. For the Xiaomi SU7 Max, you can use up to a 871-volt SiC charger, which provides 5 kilometers in 220 minutes and up to 15 kilometers in the next 510 minutes.
A key advantage of this technology is also the intelligent charging system for the battery cells stored in the floor. As part of the optional accessories, Xiaomi has prepared home charging for customers too—something you can know as “wallbox charging”, with a voltage of 220 V / 7 kW or 380 V / 11 kW.
In-cabin navigation and LiDAR sensors
Xiaomi also put its cards on autonomous driving modes and an in-cabin navigation system. Using LiDAR sensors, it delivers its own autopilot technology, which will be available in two versions – Xiaomi Pilot Pro and Pilot MAX, and it’s also complemented by the DRIVE Orin chip from NVIDIA.
Xiaomi tested its autonomous technology in a variety of weather conditions, as well as during evening and nighttime hours.
The vehicle is equipped with eleven high-resolution cameras to record the surroundings. The manufacturer plans up to 10 million test kilometers for its autonomous / assisted driving modes and an automatic parking mode over the next three years. This technology will also be available across all configurations in the portfolio.
Xiaomi Hyper OS and intelligent vehicle equipment
The Xiaomi SU7 will feature up to 5 multifunction displays in the interior to control the Xiaomi HyperOS multimedia system. The main one is a 16.1″ screen with fine 3K resolution, placed between the front seats. The system’s highlight is tailor-made apps that you can use to control the trunk or the vehicle seats.
You can also use multitasking, which you might know from Xiaomi tablets, to display three apps at the same time. The manufacturer also thought about mirroring content from your smartphone—for example, to watch movies while the vehicle is parked.
The screens integrated into the rear seats are surprisingly fully functional Xiaomi tablets. Specifically, it’s the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro with a 12.4″ display, but they’ve been redesigned to suit the needs of the Xiaomi SU7. The tablets feature a magnetic mounting and power via a set of three pins on the back. They also include the Xiaomi HyperOS system with multimedia apps.
The remaining two screens are the dashboard displays in front of the steering wheel, with digital gauges and driving information, as well as the mentioned 56″ “Heads-Up” panel placed in front of the driver on the windshield. This HUD panel will deliver a maximum brightness of up to 13,000 nits and a contrast ratio of 1500:1, ensuring very good readability in all weather conditions.
Apple CarPlay and plenty of optional accessories from Xiaomi
Xiaomi understands how important it is to customize the vehicle, and offers a set of original accessories under its own brand. Besides standard add-ons like a compressor, you’ll also get an external Bluetooth speaker in collaboration with Harman / Kardon, or a child car seat in collaboration with the qBORN brand.
You can also add physical buttons to the main display, with a rotary volume control and pairing via NFC, plus storage compartments for sorting your luggage in the trunk. A set of extra neck pillows will take care of your comfort, and you can also upgrade the vehicle performance indicators with small external panels.
A pleasant surprise is also the partnership with the American company Apple. Xiaomi therefore integrates the Apple CarPlay system into its models, as well as a connection with Apple iPad tablets.
Among the vehicle’s safety features is a certified AEB (Active Engine Brake) system, which is also complemented by intelligent functions called AEB Pro. The vehicle automatically brakes when it detects an obstacle, corrects your driving when another vehicle appears in your blind spot, and this technology is even available for night driving at speeds up to 120 km/h.
