The year 2020 is especially important for Xiaomi. The company is preparing celebrations of the 10th anniversary since its founding, and the Redmi project celebrated its first birthday as an independent brand.
Year 2020 is the year of Xiaomi
Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, used the celebration of Redmi’s first anniversary as an independent brand, and with his speech surprised everyone. In his statement, among other things, he wanted to share with those present a few interesting facts about the beginnings of the brand. He said that what we all know today as Xiaomi could actually have been called Xuande.

Exactly January 14 / 2010 the group of founders of a new technology company met for the first time to lay the imagined cornerstone of a new agreement. Back then, none of them knew what the new company—and actually the brand—would be called.
According to the CEO, the brand “Red Star” was one of the first proposed names. However, the name couldn’t thrive mainly due to certain problems related to other trademarks with a similar name.
Similarly, on 14 January, the founders of the Xiaomi company considered possible business names such as “Xuande” or even “Red Storm”. It could also have been “Qianqi”, “Antong” or “Lingxi”.
In the end, everyone agreed on the name Xiaomi, which is now known worldwide and is a globally recognized brand.
The commonly used abbreviation Mi
Besides the path to Xiaomi’s trademark name, Lei Jun also mentioned additional details about the “Mi” logo. You can find it on almost every product made by the company, or on its packaging. “Mi” is essentially an abbreviation that can have several meanings.
The first one is “Mobile Internet”, because the company intended to create a network of products connected to mobile internet focused on internet calling.
Similarly, another interesting meaning is “Mission Impossible” – literally translated as “impossible mission.” According to the CEO, the Xiaomi project, which has now become the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, was quite hard to imagine at the beginning. At the start, it was practically impossible to build a company on the scale we know today.
Undoubtedly, some very interesting statements show us the level of humility of each of Xiaomi’s founders. We can’t forget that the main goal of the brand was nothing else than to offer the end user, in an affordable way, all the wonders and benefits that technology provides. And they’ve been succeeding at that for the tenth year already.
