Not long ago, Xiaomi unveiled its anniversary smartphone, the Mi 8. It didn’t take long, and the well-known DxO Mark company got hold of it. The result? More than exciting!
The aforementioned company, which has a knack for independent testing of cameras, rated it as one of the five best camera phones. Praise was directed at the smartphone’s camera as its score for photo quality—105 points—also beat the competition from Samsung, the Galaxy S9+. The overall score is the same as the just-mentioned competing model, but the photo quality is by 1 point higher in Xiaomi’s favor.
Video quality
When it comes to video quality, Xiaomi is a bit disappointing – it scored 88 points. The pros include very fast automatic autofocus, low noise, and a wide dynamic range. The cons are exposure quality, white balance, and detail.

Statement from DxO Mark
The company claims that the “em-i eight” can capture photos with a good dynamic range in various scenes, even in lower-light conditions. Under different lighting conditions, with automatic focusing it keeps noise low. The smartphone takes better photos than an iPhone X, but with its dual camera it still doesn’t reach the top spot held by the Huawei P20 Pro, which has as many as 3 cameras.
Hardware specs
The quality of the photos is handled by a dual-camera setup—both cameras offer a resolution of 12 Mpx, with different apertures: f/1.8 (main lens) and f/2.4 (telephoto lens). The main camera is a wide-angle Sony IMX363 sensor with 1.4 µm pixel size, and of course it supports 4K video recording. The telephoto lens boasts 2x optical zoom, 1.0 µm pixel size, and AI support.
Interesting for fans of the “split” style – the front camera has a resolution of up to 20 megapixels, pixel size is 1.8 µm, it supports HDR, and just like the telephoto lens – artificial intelligence. It can record video in Full HD at 30 fps.
