Xiaomi hasn’t been just about smartphones and wearables for a long time. If you follow their ecosystem, you know they’re gradually filling every gap left behind by Apple or Samsung.

The latest leak now suggests that its next target is exactly the Apple AirTag. In HyperOS code, clear traces of a product with the simple name Xiaomi Tag have appeared, and the first details look surprisingly concrete.

The Xiaomi Tag leaked straight from HyperOS and looks painfully familiar

Information about the Xiaomi Tag comes directly from the HyperOS system code. It was discovered by the well-known source Kacper Skrzypek and shared on the social network X. Along with it, the first hints at the design also appeared. Xiaomi Tag has an oval shape, an integrated keyring loop, and at first glance it resembles a combination of the Apple AirTag and the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2. No experiments, no odd ideas—just a functional design that should fit everyday use.

What’s more interesting are the technical details. In the code, two models show up at once: one with ultra-wideband connectivity support (UWB) and one without it.

This suggests that Xiaomi wants to reach two groups of users. More demanding ones who want precise object tracking within a few centimeters, and those who are fine with basic Bluetooth tracking for a lower price.

Power will be provided by the classic CR2032 battery—exactly the same one used by Samsung or Apple. That’s good news because it’s a cheap and easy-to-find solution with no need for charging. In practice, this means battery life measured in months, not days.

A smaller letdown for now is regional availability. HyperOS code currently links only to Chinese models, indicating that the Xiaomi Tag could be exclusive to the domestic market at first. However, that doesn’t mean a definitive verdict yet. Xiaomi has repeatedly launched a product first in China and only later quietly shipped it to Europe or into global distribution.

Everything will depend on how well the device network works within the HyperOS ecosystem. The launch date is still unclear, but the fact that the Xiaomi Tag is already directly in system code suggests an official reveal may not be far off. Most likely, it will happen after the launch of the series of Redmi Turbo 5, where the Xiaomi Tag could slot in as another piece of the growing smart ecosystem puzzle.

If Xiaomi sets an aggressive price—just like it does with most accessories—Apple AirTag could face genuinely unpleasant competition after a long time. Now it only remains to be seen whether the Xiaomi Tag will also look beyond China.
