Redmi A1: A cheap phone with clean Android
Xiaomi officially unveiled new smartphones for the Indian market. Among them is also an affordable new model labeled Redmi A1. It’s a basic device that takes some elements from mid-range smartphones and integrates clean Android in the style of the latest Android One device called Xiaomi Mi A3.
In any case, we can’t consider this device a powerful or even gaming smartphone. On the contrary—it offers a very simple and discreet design, affordable materials, and a great price-to-performance ratio, along with smooth software. The device dimensions are capped at 76,75 x 164,9 x 9,09 mm; then the weight comes to 192 grams.
As you can see in the official photos, the probably most interesting element is the processing of the device’s back panel. It offers a plastic back cover with a design that simulates leather materials. We’ve already seen this finish in cheaper devices from the daughter brand, for example POCO M3.
The smartphone goes on sale in three colors. Specifically, it comes in black, green, and blue. On this page, you can also find the rear camera module, which includes unspecified 8 MPx and 2 MPx sensors. This basic setup probably won’t deliver breathtaking photo results, but we also have to take into account production costs and the attractive low selling price.
6.52″ HD+ display, MediaTek processor, and only 10 W charging via microUSB
Naturally, the low price shows in the rather wide bezels around the display, which features a teardrop-shaped notch. It houses a 5 MPx front camera with basic photo quality. The display measures 6,52″, HD+ resolution (1600 x 720 pixels), uses IPS LCD technology, and offers brightness of 400 nits. These fairly basic specs are mainly suitable for a non-demanding user.
It’s not different when it comes to performance either. An integrated processor MediaTek Helio A22 handles that, paired with LPDDR4x RAM. Internal storage is 32 GB and you can expand it with a microSD memory card up to 512 GB (the slot supports 2 x nanoSIM + microSD). Other features include Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, A-GPS, or a 3.5 mm audio connector.
The main advantage of this device, called Redmi A1, is the unusual software—at least compared to other Xiaomi or Redmi devices. The operating system Android 12 is available in its simplest form, without the graphical overlay MIUI. Besides a fast and smooth operation, this can also mean reliable software updates. However, the number of them was not specified by the Xiaomi brand.
We can wrap up the specs with a 5000 mAh battery, which promises a fairly long battery life on a single charge, given the specifications. However, it disappoints by today’s standards with slow 10 W charging, as well as the outdated microUSB connector.
So if you want to save money, this smartphone could be an interesting choice, but you can’t have too high expectations from it. It may also be suitable as a second or backup smartphone for the household, or a device for kids and seniors.
