The company Xiaomi successfully launched sales of its first electric vehicle Xiaomi SU7. But who is behind its design? You might be surprised, but the design was handled by a person whose Chinese brand “stole” it from German automaker BMW.

The design of the Xiaomi SU7 was created by a designer with experience at BMW!

A truly eye-catching design for Xiaomi’s debut electric vehicle. The Chinese brand left nothing to chance and entrusted its design concept to a designer named Tianyuan Li. He’s really a distinctive figure in the automotive industry, and it’s no coincidence that he also left his signature on the Xiaomi SU7. vehicle.

Xiaomi is taking a really ambitious path and, beyond the electric car itself, invested a truly large amount into the vehicle’s development, as well as building its massive, robotized factory. However, what matters for the customer isn’t the production process, but the resulting look of the vehicle. And it was fulfilling exactly this task that Xiaomi kicked off back in August 2021.

Precisely during this period, one of the most reputable designers in the electric vehicle industry joined the team. Tianyuan Li, the current head of design for Xiaomi’s EV division, has been working on the project for over two years now, where he had truly a lot of freedom in designing.

From Germany to China

So who exactly is Tianyuan Li? After completing his studies in industrial product design at the Southwest University of Science and Technology, he joined CH Auto as a vehicle designer and began his successful career in this sector.

From that moment onward, he worked for such renowned companies as PSA or BMW, expressing the creativity that ultimately led him to join Xiaomi for his new, ambitious project.

In fact, the key to his signature was shaped during the last five years of his career before joining Xiaomi. During that time, he held the position of head designer for the BMW M series and BMW i, two of the most important families within the brand, whose final work culminated in the popular BMW iX model—an car that has attracted wide attention since its launch.

It was in the second half of the year 2021 that he returned from Munich to Shanghai to lead the design team behind the new Xiaomi SU7 and bring his vision to a car that, as we’ve recently seen, is packed with specific details and tech features.

To sum it up, Lei Jun also had to make a key decision in the field of design. And we can say that, on such an ambitious project, the brand definitely didn’t get it wrong. We’re curious whether this designer’s work will also show up in other Xiaomi models, but it’s clear that the base SU7 model has already set the bar quite high.
