HyperOS is the latest software from Xiaomi, which is already gradually being rolled out to the global market as well. But what exactly is it? Will it replace the current MIUI graphical interface, or even the operating system itself?

HyperOS: What is it?

This time of year, we usually find out which smartphones will get support for the latest operating system. It was originally supposed to be MIUI 15, and on the internet there would probably have been leaks about the upcoming MIUI 16. However, Xiaomi brings a surprise: HyperOS.

This is specifically software whose leaks have been with us here for several months already. What’s more, the company presents this software as an “operating system” that consists of multiple layers. So it’s not only a graphical overlay—at least not for the Chinese version.

Right after the Chinese launch of HyperOS, people started wondering whether this software is based on the Android operating system kernel. For example, Huawei’s competing ecosystem built its own mobile services, bundled into HarmonyOS. But that’s not the case with Xiaomi.

It has multiple layers and customization for different products

And it’s the Android operating system framework that became the basis for the new HyperOS interface. However, it’s just one of the layers. So we can talk about an operating system, but depending on use and the target device, it goes through modifications and customization by the manufacturer.

HyperOS takes advantage of Android’s open-source nature. Thanks to this, Xiaomi can integrate its own unique features, design elements, and security improvements into the user interface. And despite the differences, it still keeps compatibility with Android apps and services, as well as support for the popular Play Store.

It’s also important to mention that not all features from Chinese HyperOS will make it into the European—so global—versions of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones. We’ve also prepared a separate article for you about HyperOS itself and the new features: the differences between the global and Chinese HyperOS versions.

If we look at the software information, we’ll find three pieces of data. These include the OS version pointing to the HyperOS version, a similar data point pointing to Android, and also the date of the security update.
