Xiaomi, together with its sub-brand Redmi, held a press conference today. It focused on camera technologies and showed us several interesting innovations they’re working on together, which their future smartphones will get soon.
Xiaomi keeps investing in cameras
About two years ago, Chinese Xiaomi created its own division for developing mobile cameras. It invests enormous amounts in this development, but the results are very visible. Xiaomi currently runs up to 9 R&D centers focused purely on mobile photography, two of which are also located in Europe. For example, just last month they opened it in Finland.
Xiaomi began developing its own camera technology back in 2017 with the Xiaomi Mi 6 model. Since then, the cameras in Xiaomi smartphones have made huge improvements.
Where they used to be average to below average, the current Xiaomi Mi 9 flagship is third in the world ranking for photo quality. In video quality, it’s even the absolute king of the global smartphone market.
64 MPx camera officially unveiled
However, the main program of the conference wasn’t statistics, but the introduction of a 64 MPx camera. Xiaomi teamed up with the tech leader Samsung, and together they bring the Samsung GW1 image sensor.
The manufacturer confirmed that the new 64 MPx Samsung GW1 camera will be implemented in its first smartphone, which will launch under the Redmi brand. It will be unveiled as early as next quarter, but they haven’t announced the exact date yet.
At the same time, Redmi will be one of the first global brands with a 64 MPx smartphone. During the conference, they showed another photo from the upcoming Redmi smartphone, which also boasts unbelievable levels of detail.
The sensor will create photos in a huge resolution of 9248 x 6936 px. The sensor size is 1/1.7″, and it’s 38% larger than the previous 48 MPx sensors. A larger sensor means better light throughput — and therefore better photos in poor lighting conditions. The sensor also brings technologies like Smart ISO or Hybrid 3D HDR, which is HDR powered by hardware.
An enormous 108 MPx camera!
But that’s not all. At the conference, Xiaomi and Samsung also announced a huge 108 MPx sensor, which will be used exclusively in the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone. For at least the next few months, no other manufacturer will use a similar camera in a smartphone, so it’s a real exclusivity for Xiaomi.
The sensor will create photos in literally massive resolution – 12032 x 9024 pixels. So far, a lot of information about this sensor hasn’t been released, and we don’t know any further details. We should find out more about it pretty soon.
Could we be seeing the new breakthrough mobile camera as early as the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4? Only time will tell. Be sure to keep following Xiaomi Planet — and you’ll learn everything among the first.
