Xiaomi is dusting off an iconic concept, but pushing it much further
If you remember the model Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, you probably didn’t miss its tiny rear display. Back then, it was an interesting idea, but it felt more like an experiment. A few years later Xiaomi shows how it imagines its full-fledged use—the new rear display is now much larger and covers almost the entire camera module.
It’s not just about the design, even though that’s top-tier. This display is meant to genuinely add value to your everyday use.
Its main functionality? Mirroring information from the main display and using the rear camera for “selfie” photos. This way, you won’t have to compromise between quality and comfort. The rear display will simply let you see yourself while taking photos with the main camera—whether it’s the main sensor, ultra-wide-angle, or a telephoto lens.
But that’s not all. When the phone is locked, “Magic Back Screen” turns into an Always-On panel with basic information—you’ll see the time, the date, and notifications. A quick glance, and you have everything under control without having to light up the main display.
Additionally, Xiaomi suggests that in the future the rear panel could be used to display widgets—weather, calendar, countdowns, music playback, and similar. There’s also potential for showing QR tickets, boarding passes, or NFC payment info—directly and simply, from the back of the phone.
Hardware and camera system designed to beat the iPhone
Under the hood, of course, you’ll find plenty of raw power. These will be the first-ever devices equipped with the latest flagship chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The Xiaomi 17 Pro series is clearly aimed at the most demanding users.
Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, has openly stated that this is a direct competitor to the iPhone—and in many ways, he says it may even surpass it.
The rear display is certainly a big draw, but we can’t ignore the new triple 50 MPx camera system developed in collaboration with Leica. The result should be even better low-light performance, faster focusing, and more accurate color rendering. The primary sensor will offer an aperture of f/1.67, and the telephoto lens will feature f/3.0 with 5x optical zoom, equivalent to 115 mm focal length.
An ultra-wide-angle lens will come with 17 mm a focal length. From a visual standpoint, it’s a clear change—the main lenses are now placed in one large module, while the other sensors and the LED flash are housed separately. It’s not only functional, but honestly, it’s also more visually striking.
