Xiaomi reveals another ace from the new Xiaomi 18 Pro series: 4 000 nits and a display that dims itself from the side

Quick summary

  • Xiaomi confirms that the Xiaomi 18 Pro lineup will get a Super Pixel display in version 2.0.
  • The panel has two types of pixels alternating in a 1:1 ratio—one set is standard, the other has a narrow viewing angle.
  • When you turn on Privacy Mode, only the second set lights up, so you can’t see it from the side on the display.
  • Peak brightness has risen to 4 000 nits, and the new lighting system is 20% more efficient.
  • Everything will be revealed at the premiere September 23 at 13:00 our time.

Three days before the presentation, Xiaomi unveiled the final big piece of the specs for the upcoming flagship models— the display. And it’s not just about boosting numbers in a table. Xiaomi 18 Pro is expected to get a panel that can protect itself against side peeking—without a film and without sacrificing image quality.

Updated: Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max have already been officially unveiled — you can find their final specs and prices in our article from the launch.

One panel, two types of pixels

The trick the whole thing is built on is simple to describe and pretty crazy to manufacture. The Xiaomi 18 Pro display doesn’t use just one type of pixel, but two. One set is standard, while the other has a deliberately narrow viewing angle—the light from it basically goes straight forward. Both sets are alternated in the panel in a 1:1 ratio, so they’re evenly distributed across the entire surface.

With normal use, all pixels light up at the same time, and the phone looks like any other flagship—full brightness, full image quality. But when you turn on Privacy Mode, the panel simply shuts off the standard set and leaves only the narrow-angle set lit. The image stays readable for you, but someone next to you on the bus—or a colleague leaning over your shoulder—will only see a dark screen.

It has one major advantage over a display film

Privacy protection films have existed for years and work like microscopic shutters stuck on the display. The problem is that these shutters get in the way of the light that’s supposed to reach you. Under them, the display loses brightness, the image looks less crisp, and after longer reading your eyes feel it. Xiaomi is aiming squarely at this in its materials, showing a comparison where text through the film looks grainy and loses contrast.

The in-panel solution bypasses that compromise. Since Super Pixel technology gives each pixel a complete trio of RGB subpixels, the image stays sharp whether Privacy Mode is on or off. In other words—you don’t pay for privacy with image quality the way you did with solutions glued on from the outside.

But Xiaomi isn’t the first. The same principle was already shown by Samsung in the Galaxy S26 Ultra under the name Flex Magic Pixel—there, the display also combines narrow and wide pixels, and Samsung presented it as the first-ever hardware privacy protection built directly into an OLED panel. In February, it was reported that vivo and Oppo were also trying the same thing, but neither of their new flagships ended up shipping with it. That makes Xiaomi the second in line to actually deploy this technology.

The display also got a new lighting system and 4 000 nits

Privacy protection is the most noticeable new feature, but not the only one. The panel is built on a new generation of the OLED lighting system called M11, which Xiaomi says brings higher efficiency and a wider color gamut matching the BT.2020 standard. The key is a new green emissive material—compared to the previous generation, it’s expected to be 20% more efficient, which will show up in real-world brightness and power consumption.

Peak brightness is intended to reach 4 000 nits, and Xiaomi says it’s its strongest display yet for direct sunlight. What’s also interesting is what the company claims about resolution: thanks to a full RGB layout where each pixel truly has all three subpixels, sharpness should be comparable to traditional 2K panels, but with lower power consumption than 1.5K. These are still numbers from the manufacturer, so let’s treat them as a marketing promise that will have to wait for independent measurements.

The premiere is already on Wednesday

Xiaomi has also confirmed that in the higher tier, you’ll get two display sizes—and both will be flagship. That means the smaller Xiaomi 18 Pro and the larger Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will receive the same technology, not a cut-down version for a cheaper model. That’s a nice change from the usual approach, where the best panel only makes it into the most expensive variant.

The whole lineup will be officially unveiled on September 23 at 19:00 China time, which is 13:00 for you. That’s also when we should find out what’s still missing from the official materials—exact resolutions, diagonal sizes, and the refresh rate of both panels.
