Chinese Xiaomi, known for its vast ecosystem of smart devices, has finally entered the auto industry with the official debut of its first electric car Xiaomi SU7 in its home market on March 28.
Remote control of the car from the comfort of your smartphone
One of the expected features of the Xiaomi SU7 is also its integration into the entire Xiaomi ecosystem, starting right with the vehicle’s “brain”, i.e. the HyperOS operating system. Just like the competing Tesla, Xiaomi also offers its customers an app from day one, so they can, to a certain extent, “control” their car directly from the screen of their smartphone.
The Xiaomi Auto app, which the manufacturer announced on China’s social network Weibo, will allow Xiaomi SU7 owners to seamlessly integrate their smartphones with the new electric vehicle — and potentially also with future Xiaomi models. As of now, like the electric car itself, the app is available only in China.
Key remote-control features of the Xiaomi SU7 via the app include the ability to lock and unlock the vehicle remotely, check the battery charge level, get access to real-time GPS location data, control the lighting systems, and even monitor the interior temperature.
Xiaomi Auto also makes the practical side of owning an electric vehicle easier – it will allow users to reserve charging stations for their SU7 and ensure vehicle safety through remote monitoring.
Xiaomi’s move into the automotive world points to a broader trend of connecting smart devices, where the lines between traditional consumer electronics and mobility solutions are blurring.
Examples include screens built into the rear seats — fully functional tablets Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro with a 12.4″ diagonal, though they were redesigned for the needs of Xiaomi SU7. The tablets feature a magnetic mount and power via a set of three pins on the back. Similarly, they also include the HyperOS system with multimedia apps.
