Xiaomi wants to replace SMS messages. It plans a new, revamped messaging system for 5G networks

With the arrival of 5G networks, traditional SMS messages will be replaced by a new, more advanced, and more complex 5G messaging system. This new way of communicating with fewer restrictions, which has already started being tested on some Xiaomi smartphones, could also come commercially soon.

Xiaomi wants to replace SMS messages

5G messages have already been spotted as part of a test on a few Xiaomi devices with Chinese ROM MIUI 12. Thanks to this new messaging system, we’ll be able to send not only longer messages at once, but also images, audio, video, emojis, or even the contacts themselves.

The new 5G messages feature is enabled by default on all compatible Xiaomi devices. If this feature isn’t enabled automatically, it will be possible to enable it in the mobile networks settings section directly in the MIUI manufacturer overlay.

The future of 5G messages

At the moment, it isn’t exactly known on which devices this new 5G messages feature will be integrated. It’s also expected that the feature will be made available on all—not just Xiaomi smartphones that support 5G networks.

The new 5G messages option is currently available only for Chinese ROM MIUI 12. However, it remains to be seen whether this new type of messaging will be implemented in the future beyond China’s borders. That would bring it to a global level and change the way we send traditional SMS messages as we know them today.
