Humanoid robots are no longer just a vision from sci-fi movies. Xiaomi has now shown that its robot CyberOne is gradually moving from laboratories directly into real production. In its automotive factory, it tests robotic systems on increasingly challenging tasks, and the results are more than promising.

From 90 % to 98 % success rate during assembly

The first CyberOne tests kicked off back in March, when the robot was tasked with assembling self-tapping screws. At the time, it could work non-stop for three hours with an accuracy of approximately 90,2 %. However, over the past few months, Xiaomi has significantly improved both the software and motion control.

Today, with the same operation, the robot achieves success rates of up to 98 %, getting only about one percentage point below the level of an experienced human worker. This is a major breakthrough that shows how quickly humanoid robot technology is developing.

It can also handle flexible parts

After mastering simpler tasks, CyberOne was given significantly more demanding assignments. One of them is handling the side panels of the car’s center console. The robot must pick the correct part from a large container, grip it safely, and then place it in precisely the right spot.

At first glance, this looks like a simple task, but in practice these plastic parts are flexible, irregularly shaped, and can deform during handling. That’s why the robot uses coordination of both hands and its entire body, constantly evaluating its stability and the position of the object.

Sensitive hands can react to resistance

One of the most interesting features of CyberOne is the sensors built directly into its hands. They can detect the force of contact with an object or the surroundings. If a part gets stuck or bends while being inserted, the robot automatically adjusts its trajectory instead of immediately stopping the operation.

The ability to react to unpredictable situations is one of the biggest challenges in modern robotics. That’s why Xiaomi is developing advanced algorithms that allow the robot to adapt its movement in a more human-like way.

The second tested task is assembling and disassembling the plastic transport boxes used in production. The robot must find the small opening tabs, release the latches, and then coordinate both hands while folding the individual walls of the box.

Once finished, it can stack the boxes, move them to the designated location, and collaborate with other robots working on the same production line. This is another step toward fully automated manufacturing processes.

Development continues

Xiaomi admits that CyberOne isn’t perfect yet. For some tasks, it still needs to rotate the box into the right position, while an experienced person would find the grip using touch alone. That’s why the company is preparing the next generation of biomimetic hands, which will be more sensitive and allow for even more natural handling of objects.

During testing, a remote monitoring system also remains active. If the robot encounters a situation it can’t solve on its own, an operator can intervene and safely take over control. This is how Xiaomi gradually gathers valuable experience that could significantly change how modern factories operate in the future.
