The center is being created in the heart of Europe’s automotive industry, and its team makes the importance even clearer. Xiaomi has managed to attract experts from prestigious brands such as BMW, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz. This mix of Chinese technological agility and European experience could be a decisive competitive advantage for Xiaomi.
A strong team with extensive experience from the automotive world
The new center is led by Rudolf Dittrich, who worked on the development of the racing model BMW M4 GT3. His experience with high-performance vehicles suggests that Xiaomi is serious about performance. Vehicle driving dynamics are handled by Claus-Dieter Groll, who has been behind projects such as BMW 3 Series, 5 Series or SUV models X5 and X7.
Also interesting is how the other roles are filled. The design team is headed by Jean-Arthur Madelaine, who worked on the futuristic concept Mercedes-Benz Vision GT, while the exterior design is handled by Fabian Schmölz-Obermeier, known from models like Porsche 911 GT3 RS or Lamborghini Temerario.

Focus on performance, design, and advanced technologies
The European R&D center will primarily focus on developing high-performance electric vehicles, premium design, and advanced technologies. Xiaomi is targeting a segment where brands like BMW and Porsche dominate. This move also shows that the company doesn’t want to compete just on price, but also on quality and the driving experience.

The first model that will be significantly influenced by the European team is set to be a planned SUV, Xiaomi YU7 GT. This model is meant to represent a more powerful version of the already existing SUV, and based on the available information, it should deliver extreme performance and top-tier driving characteristics.
Europe as an important market for expansion
The opening of the center in Munich is not a coincidence. Germany is considered the automotive industry hub in Europe, and it will likely be the first country where Xiaomi launches its electric vehicles outside of China. According to CEO Lei Jun’s statements, the company plans to enter global markets as early as 2027.
Xiaomi has had a successful start in the domestic market, where it already sells models like SU7 and its more powerful version SU7 Ultra. In just the past year, the brand managed to deliver more than 400,000 vehicles, with the target for 2026 being as many as 550,000 units.
Competition for traditional brands?
Traditional automakers will have to respond not only to price, but also to technological sophistication and the speed of innovation that Chinese companies bring. Xiaomi also has a strong base in software and the device ecosystem, which could be a crucial advantage for electric vehicles.
From the perspective of tech fans, this is an exceptionally interesting development. The combination of European know-how and Chinese innovation can bring new standards to the electric vehicle segment. The coming years will therefore be decisive in whether Xiaomi can break through beyond its home market and become a global automaker.
