In this article, we’ll also go back to the Xiaomi press conference that took place on 24. September / září 2019. This time, though, there won’t be any talk of the jaw-dropping Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha, nor of the upgraded flagship Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro.
Let’s take a look inside the latest software overlay MIUI 11, which was also unveiled at the press conference.
What do the codes in the new MIUI 11 reveal?
After the release of the new version of the popular software overlay for Xiaomi and Redmi phones, the rollout of its test beta started almost immediately. One of the XDA team members – developers decided to examine the code in the built-in Camera and Photo app. His goal was to discover new features, and it worked.
After a more detailed analysis, it turned out that the Camera app in MIUI 11 contains code strings that enable support for recording high-resolution video. These are so-called 8K resolution 7680 × 4320 pixels at a capture rate of 30 frames per second (30 fps).
Code snippet:
<string name = "pref_video_quality_entry_8kuhd"> UHD 8K, 30fps </string>
<string name = "video_ultra_clear_tip_8k"> 8 K UHD </string>
Another piece of evidence of the new feature was a logo found in the Camera app in MIUI 11, which should indicate a new profile in the app, thanks to which it will be possible to record video in ultra HD resolution. Below you can see the real logo that was pulled from the new Camera app in MIUI 11.
However, a software tweak isn’t enough for filming in 8K resolution. At the moment, though, Xiaomi — or any other manufacturer — doesn’t have a phone whose hardware could handle creating this kind of video. Even the newest and most expensive Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha still doesn’t have any predisposition for such performance.
Besides, the manufacturer would definitely not forget to praise such functionality. Also, the integrated 108 MPx from Samsung, based on the available parameters, can handle at most 6K video at a frame rate of 30 fps.
Filming in 8K with 30 fps also requires substantial demands on the processor. At the moment, even the most powerful Snapdragon 855 or 855+ chipset sets don’t support such a range of capture. The maximum supported video quality from the perspective of Snapdragon processors is currently at the level of 4K resolution with 60 fps.
You shouldn’t have to wait long for a new smartphone
It seems that Xiaomi will soon pull another ace from its sleeve in the form of a new smartphone capable of creating 8K / 30 fps video, and it will have the new top-most processor. It’s rumored that it could be the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the successor to 855 and 855+ chipsets.
And that we’re not talking about a distant future is confirmed by the new series of TVs Xiaomi Mi TV Pro, which gained the ability to play 8K videos. Everything is fitting together perfectly, and we can’t wait to see what Xiaomi will show us next.
