Xiaomi explains why they didn’t use a pop-up front camera in the Redmi K40 series

27. February 2021 2 min read 1 comment

The new flagship smartphone series Redmi K40 no longer includes a pop-up front camera module, unlike its predecessors K20 Pro and K30 Pro. The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi now explains why that is—i.e., why the new device features a cutout for the front camera.

The Redmi K40 series no longer offers a pop-up front camera

Even the previous generations of Redmi flagship smartphones, the Redmi K20 Pro and Redmi K30 Pro, included an innovative pop-up front camera module. Thanks to this technology, the front display didn’t have any notch.

New models for year 2021, Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro, come with a front camera placed in a cutout in the display. It also has compact dimensions with a diameter of only 2,76 millimeters.

A small cutout in the middle of the upper part of the screen doesn’t disrupt the view too much. On the other hand, it clearly differentiates the previous and current design of Redmi smartphones in the K series.

A change in design and approach by Redmi

As explained by Lu Weibing, the CEO of Redmi, mechanical camera pop-up modules take up too much space inside the device. This prevents the introduction of certain other technologies, and that’s why the manufacturer stopped using this type of camera.

According to Redmi’s CEO, these modules make it harder to achieve a thin and lightweight smartphone design. This design was made possible in the new Redmi smartphones thanks to the integrated camera with a cutout in the display.

In short, it seems that the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has said goodbye to the mechanical pop-up camera module mechanism. The company is focusing more on improving the weight and dimensions of its smartphones—until front cameras integrated under the display become commercially available.
