Even before the US Apple unveiled its new iPhone 16 series, Xiaomi took second place in worldwide smartphone sales. This happened in August, when the Chinese manufacturer sold more mobile phone units than Apple. There are several reasons.

In August, Xiaomi overtook Apple in sales
The first reason why Xiaomi overtook Apple in sales is that new iPhones were introduced in September, and during August fewer were sold simply because users were waiting for the announcement of the new series. This is something that has happened again since 2021—this time for the second time already.
This year, Xiaomi also helped drive growth in Latin America by expanding its advertising campaign. The first time this kind of situation happened in the year 2021 mentioned earlier shocked many tech enthusiasts. Samsung and Apple are companies that are still at the top of the sales chart, with the South Korean firm holding first place for a long time.
Throughout the year, Xiaomi has been steadily holding on to third place. You can clearly see how this rankings chart has evolved since 2021 in a graph prepared by Counterpoint Research, a market analyst in the mobile world. As you can see, the curves for Samsung and Apple are more volatile over the years, while Xiaomi’s curve is very stable across the entire period. Another reason could be that Xiaomi introduces more new products during the year than the other two tech giants.

The Chinese brand will be able to maintain this trend by rolling out new products from the Xiaomi 14T and Redmi Note 14 lines. The second quarter of the current year was especially strong for Xiaomi, and during June the company recorded a 22 % increase in sales.
It was the manufacturer that grew the most during that period. You can expect the sales share to be more favorable for Apple again in September, but we really enjoy watching how Xiaomi, in its comparatively short existence, is catching up to the biggest names in the world.
