Our detailed review:
Solar panel and built-in battery
The intelligent security camera Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro has a slightly non-traditional design in the shape of a cube with rounded edges, with an integrated solar panel at the top. It will delight you with its IP66 certification.
Since it’s a truly wireless camera, you won’t need absolutely any cables to set it up. The camera uses a WiFi connection, and an integrated battery powers it. It has a capacity of up to 10 000 mAh.
According to lab tests, it should last up to 5 months on a single charge. In real-world conditions, of course, the runtime will differ. Ideally, thanks to the built-in solar panel, the camera can be self-sufficient without needing to be recharged. Solar panel conversion is 20%.
For this kind of self-sufficiency, we’d need at least 2 hours of direct sunlight every day, which isn’t realistic in our climate. Battery life also depends on the number of recorded events and how often you use the camera for different purposes.
We don’t expect the camera to be self-sufficient here, but the presence of a solar panel is clearly an advantage.
2.5K resolution and a quality sensor
Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro is equipped with a 1/2.7″ sensor with an f/1.6 aperture, thanks to which it delivers a clean, detailed image both day and night. The camera has 4 Mpx, video resolution is 2560 x 1440 px with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and HDR support is included—this time at a hardware level.
It’s not a pan-and-tilt camera, but horizontally it has a viewing angle of 113.3°, and vertically it’s 58.7°. The total field of view across the diagonal is 132°.
The smart camera also features four LED diodes placed above the lens to provide illumination in the dark. With their help, we can achieve a colored image at night, or use the light as a warning when activity is detected while we’re away.
For night vision, it uses a pair of infrared lights that provide the well-known monochrome recording.
Space monitoring and indoor station
To operate, the wireless Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro uses an indoor station that acts like a kind of gateway and the camera’s control center. It connects to this station using a wireless connection that isn’t specified in more detail.
The wireless connection between the camera and its base is energy-efficient. Because the indoor station processes many of the camera’s data, it can offload it while also helping extend the camera’s battery life.
It’s a given that there’s motion detection in the camera’s field of view, or in a selected area. If the camera detects motion, it immediately sends a notification to your smartphone via the Xiaomi Home app, along with the relevant video.
The Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro can recognize people, animals, vehicles, and even courier packages. You’ll get alerted to these objects already in the notification, and then directly in the app when you browse recorded events. All of this is possible thanks to the integrated AI chip.
Storage for videos and security
The Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro can record videos to an SD card, which is inserted into the indoor station, or to Xiaomi’s cloud as well. For cloud services, however, we only have access to a 7-day video history over a period of three months. If we want a longer history, we need an SD card or a drive connected via USB.
Xiaomi also thinks about security. In the equipment of the indoor station, you’ll also find a built-in MJA1 security chip. It features an exclusive private key and a certificate, thanks to which the data transmitted between the camera and the station is secured to protect your privacy.
Two-way audio transmission
There’s also two-way audio transmission, thanks to the built-in microphone and speaker. This way, you can use the camera to communicate with the person standing by the camera. Xiaomi claims audio recording up to a distance of 8 meters from the camera thanks to the sensitive microphone. You’ll also appreciate the noise-cancellation algorithm in the audio recording.
