Xiaomi has registered new MeUI and POCKO brands. What’s going on?

Xiaomi: MeUI and POCKO as new brands?

It may sound like a joke, however the Chinese company Xiaomi has officially registered two new brands. What’s funny is their naming – MeUI and POCKO. What’s also notable is that the new brands appeared without any prior warning and with a fairly clear intent: to avoid counterfeits.

The new information was uncovered by the Mukul Sharma profile, who through his Twitter account posted several screenshots pointing to the new registration of these quirky brands by the Chinese manufacturer. There’s no doubt that the names of these brands are extremely similar to the well-known MIUI (Xiaomi’s graphical interface layer) and POCO (a smartphone subsidiary brand).

Protection against counterfeits

So far, we don’t know of any official statement from the company. According to available information, however, it looks like an alternative registration for well-known brands, with the goal of preventing smaller Chinese manufacturers from using them for their own benefit (when making copies).

With the help of this certification, Xiaomi could avoid counterfeits of its own products (MeUI and POCKO), which other sellers would otherwise try to offer to potential customers or users who know the original product labels (MIUI and POCO).

There’s no doubt this is an interesting and unconventional move by the Chinese manufacturer. To refresh your memory: in the past, we could see the company registering trademarks for other names. For example, “Xiaomi Travel” because “Lei Jun,” referencing real people or products.
