This is what’s really going on with those crazy gadgets “from Xiaomi”: Who actually makes smart pillows or electric beds?

We mainly know Xiaomi as a smartphone manufacturer. But you’ll often also see on our site that the brand offers a wide range of other products with names of other brands. How does it work in reality?

How does it all work?

Making a portfolio like that would probably be unrealistic. Even though the company itself no longer produces only smartphones, it would be naive to expect manufacturing such a broad range.

Let’s break down step by step how it works at Xiaomi—and why some products in their name also include the word “Xiaomi” besides the brand.

Mi Store.

Founded in 2010, Xiaomi started out presenting itself as a manufacturer of software and smartphones. Later, it also began producing smart TVs, and over time it expanded its portfolio to include smart bands, laptops, e-scooters, routers, and various other products as we know them today.

Xiaomi usually labels products made in-house with its logo or the text “MI”. However, that also doesn’t mean all of those products are made exclusively in Xiaomi factories. We’ll show you how it works using the example of a very successful wearable series, Mi Band.

Under contract to Xiaomi, the devices are manufactured by Huami, but you won’t find its brand name on the product. Xiaomi is the exclusive supplier—even though Mi Band is not really made by Xiaomi itself.

A lineup of in-house brands

Here you’ll find well-known brands that were founded by Xiaomi or spun off from it. This includes, for example, Mijia, Redmi, or the newly created Poco brand.

  • Poco – is Xiaomi’s youngest offshoot, and it was announced just a few days ago. Its priority is making smartphones that will continue the successful Pocophone project.

For Poco, the headquarters and primary market is billion-people India—but we also hope products from this brand will be available for us.

Even though they haven’t presented any device yet, rumors are already saying it won’t be only about smartphones.

  • Redmi – This already separate company also came out of Xiaomi. It happened at the beginning of the year 2019, when, during the launch of the Redmi Note 7 smartphone, the new CEO Lu Weibing announced a new standalone company.

In one year, Redmi has actually done a lot—and besides smartphones, they’ve also successfully moved into other segments such as laptops and TVs, and more.

Mijia brand and platform

The Mijia brand (pronounced “mi-zhdia”) is a separate category. It was created in 2014, when Xiaomi’s executives decided to split smart home and Internet of Things products into a separate project. The brand has a shield logo, and its name was formed in Chinese by shortening the term “Smart Home.”

It produces some products on its own, and its first product was a successful rice cooker, which is extremely popular in China.

But Mijia is not just a standalone brand of smart products. It builds a whole ecosystem of devices and also includes products from external manufacturers that create quality smart home components.

It includes, for example, the lighting manufacturer Yeelight, the lock and security system manufacturer Aqara, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer Roborock, the air conditioner manufacturer Smartmi , and many others.

Among other things, Mijia’s goal is to merge all these elements into a single app that you can also find here at home—and it’s Mi Home. Thanks to this idea, you can conveniently control all smart home devices in one place.

Smaller and, in many cases, little-known manufacturers from around the world have been given a chance to make a name for themselves abroad—something they would hardly be able to do without Mijia and Xiaomi’s support.

Mijia Platform can be compared to Apple HomeKit or Google Home—platforms that also bring together smart devices from other manufacturers. So if you see a product with the “Works with Mijia” logo, you’ll know it works with the Mi Home app.

What about external manufacturers?

So why do we see some products labeled, for example, Xiaomi Aqara, Xiaomi Yeelight, and the like? The reasons are simple. Here at Xiaomi Planet we simply tell our readers that this product—even if the brand is unknown to some—is part of the Xiaomi family.

These brands also belong to the Xiaomi ecosystem

The fusion with Xiaomi guarantees quality, and you don’t have to worry about ending up with a low-quality cheap imitation.

The same idea also leads many sellers on various shopping platforms to try their luck with successful sales. Customers are more likely to buy a Xiaomi Oclean toothbrush than a toothbrush from a fairly unknown brand like Oclean.

Today, Xiaomi as a brand already sells well, and it would be wrong to treat it as a hunch—or God forbid a scam. It’s a fact. Products included in the Xiaomi ecosystem are a guarantee of quality, and the associated brand name is absolutely fine.

What is the Xiaomi ecosystem?

The Xiaomi ecosystem, also known as the MiOT Ecosystem, is a large network of smart devices that, according to Xiaomi, will “bring you the future.” The goal is to combine a wide range of mostly smart products that make everyday life easier.

They should work together, function based on mutual triggers, and be easy to control. The company uses the latest manufacturing technologies and cooperates with the most sought-after industrial designers to deliver high-quality, stylish products and devices that make life easier.

In this regard, Xiaomi is among the most active investors in local start-ups. It supports them not only financially, but also helps them strengthen their position in the market.

Over the course of 3 years, Xiaomi provided support to more than 89 start-ups. At the beginning of 2017, the best of them received a prize worth one billion dollars and reached an international level.

Xiaomi Youpin

We should also mention that Xiaomi has its own crowdfunding platform – a starting point for emerging companies that want to „change the world“ with their innovative inventions. To support startups through crowdfunding campaigns, we often also refer to them in our articles where we introduce new things.

Since the platform has already gathered more than 2 million users in China alone, ideas promoting new and young brands spread among users much faster.

This is what Xiaomi’s YouPin crowdfunding portal looks like

You’ve probably already read on our site about Xiaomi Youpin. This is exactly the platform mentioned above, which not only fuels up-and-coming projects but also acts as an online store. Today, Xiaomi Youpin is already building many offline Youpin stores in China with a wide range of products.

At Xiaomi Youpin, you can buy almost everything – from food, alcohol, everything from personal hygiene and a healthy lifestyle to smart home devices, and even furniture or electric scooters. Unfortunately, this project doesn’t work for us at the moment; it’s available in China only.

However, in early 2019, Xiaomi also introduced a similar crowdfunding platform concept in India. It’s called ShareSave, and it’s gradually gaining new fans. We believe Xiaomi will expand this platform to Europe in the near future.

Let’s now take a closer look and introduce a few major companies that produce for Xiaomi, but also make their own products that are sometimes listed alongside their name and as Xiaomi:
