Some phones look like flagships, but the truth shows itself in the first evening shot or after two days on the road. Xiaomi 17 Ultra in its Chinese version goes exactly the opposite way, and even on paper it’s the kind of device that doesn’t try to impress with just one thing, but with the whole package.
The largest Xiaomi community in Slovakia
Leica optics across a trio of sensors, a huge battery, top-tier performance, and modern connectivity including satellite communication. The result feels like a phone built for people who really use their phone for photos, videos, travel, and don’t want to deal with compromises.

Leica optics that make sense
The biggest “show” here is obvious: the camera setup. Xiaomi 17 Ultra uses Leica Summilux optics, and the whole thing is put together so that in practice you feel like you’re switching between three truly usable lenses, not three random sensors for show. The main camera is based on an extreme, 1-inch 50 MPx OmniVision OV50X (Light Fusion) sensor with a large f/1.67 aperture and OIS.
A large sensor means more light per pixel, and that shows especially where ordinary phones start to struggle — evening streets, interiors, backlit scenes, or scenes with huge contrast. Xiaomi is also pushing high dynamic range and fast focusing here so the photos aren’t just “nice at first glance,” but keep detail in shadows and don’t blow out highlights.
The added LOFIC technology is meant to help precisely in extremes—i.e., to control transitions between the bright and dark parts of a scene so your photos look more natural and less “digital.” The second star is the telephoto lens—and this is exactly where the Xiaomi 17 Ultra stands out from most flagship phones.
This is a 200 MP periscope telephoto module with a large 1/1.4″ Samsung S5KHPE sensor, and the most interesting part: continuous optical zoom in the range of roughly 75 mm to 100 mm. That’s about 3.2× to 4.3× optical zoom without having to rely on harsh digital cropping between steps. That’s a big difference compared to traditional “switching” between a couple of fixed focal lengths, where the rest is estimated by software.
So what’s the practical benefit? In this zone, you get the most “wow” shots: portraits with a pleasant perspective, detailed architecture shots, concerts, city moments, or travel photos when you don’t want (or can’t) get closer. And since the tele module has high resolution, you can also pull out very sharp crops from it without the image quickly falling apart. Xiaomi also adds a tele-macro option around 30 cm.
Leica also adds something you can hear is technical, but you can actually see the result: APO optical certification (apochromatic correction). In practice, it aims to reduce chromatic aberration (color fringing at object edges) and keep colors more accurate even in challenging light—e.g., against the light, under neon lighting, or in high-contrast scenes. In exactly those situations, you’ll often see whether the optics hold up—or whether it’s just the software saving it.
The third member of the lineup is the 50 MP ultra-wide module with a 14 mm equivalent, a field of view of 115°, and autofocus. This matters because an ultra-wide camera is often “just there for the numbers”—but Xiaomi is aiming for it to be useful for serious photos, not only one-off landscapes. The bonus is the ability to go as close as 5 cm super-macro, so the ultra-wide can be a creative toy for detailed close-up shots where you get genuinely impressive perspectives.
If you’re interested in the specific focal lengths, the whole system is built very logically: the main camera is around a 23 mm equivalent, the telephoto covers roughly 75–100 mm, and the ultra-wide goes to about 14 mm. As a result, switching between lenses feels natural—you’re changing the character of the photo, not just “zooming in digitally.”
Video that impresses creators
The photo is just half of the story; the video is the other half. Xiaomi 17 Ultra offers 8K at 30 fps, 4K up to 120 fps, and the classic 1080p. For creators, the most interesting are mainly 4K/60 for stable output and 4K/120 if you want a clean slow-motion effect without dropping to lower resolutions. You also get support for modern HDR formats during playback, stereo speakers, and recording-focused features, plus a “live” recording style. The front camera has 50 MPx and handles 4K video, so even “selfie” vlogs or quick reels can look really decent without you having to switch to the main module right away.
6,9-inch high-brightness display
The front features a 6.9-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2608 × 1200 px, smooth adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz, and peak brightness that Xiaomi rates at up to 3500 nits in scenarios with direct sunlight or while watching HDR video. The screen is protected by a durable Xiaomi Longjing Glass 3.0 cover glass. The fingerprint reader is built directly into the display and uses 3D ultrasonic technology—i.e., the type that’s typically fast, accurate, and has a good chance of working even in worse conditions.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, 6800 mAh battery and 90 W charging
The engine of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a modern 3 nm chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with an Oryon CPU architecture and a modern Adreno GPU. For everyday users, it means the phone won’t be a performance bottleneck—whether you’re playing demanding games, editing video, or using AI features in photos. There are configurations with 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB or 1 TB UFS 4.1 storage, so you get a setup that’s ready for shooting in 4K, saving RAWs, having lots of apps, and still not worrying about storage space.
The battery is one of those specs you’ll love after a few weeks of use. 6800 mAh is a number that, in practice, promises very comfortable battery life even with active photography and navigation. Charging is 90 W via cable and 50 W wirelessly—plus reverse wired charging and even wireless reverse charging are included.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a modern Chinese flagship even when it comes to connectivity: Wi-Fi 7, Dual-Bluetooth 5.4, fast USB 3.2 Gen2 (theoretically up to 10 Gbps), and broad support for 5G/4G bands. The highlight is satellite communication combined with BeiDou + Tiantong, which under the right conditions and with the service enabled can work as a backup when there’s no signal. NFC is ready for transport cards, payments, and other use cases that are common in China’s ecosystem. Audio goes through USB-C (digital headphones), stereo speakers are included, you get spatial modes, and a rich sensor package—including an IR blaster for controlling appliances, which is still one of the great features of Chinese “flagships”.
Durable, premium build and the HyperOS ecosystem
When it comes to durability, Xiaomi doesn’t cut corners: it lists testing for IP66, IP68, and even IP69. In practice, that means high resistance to water and dust within defined test scenarios. As a bonus, there’s a magnetic protective cover in the box and accessories that suggest Xiaomi wants you to actually use this phone out in the field, not just admire it on your desk.
The operating system is Xiaomi HyperOS 3, an environment that makes the most sense especially when you use multiple devices in the Xiaomi ecosystem: watches, headphones, TVs, smart home devices, routers, and more. We’d expect extended support, which—according to Xiaomi’s current policy—reaches 6 years of security patch deliveries, or 4 years of support for major OS updates. Such a phone can also be seen as the “central hub” of your whole setup, and it has the performance, battery life, and connectivity to back that up.
On the Chinese market, the base version is available in classic black and an elegant white. If that isn’t enough, there are also interesting purple or green variants, featuring subtle colored dots that resemble a starry sky. As for the special Leica Edition, it further highlights the design with an iconic red Leica detail and a two-tone finish
Xiaomi 17 Ultra: prices and availability
From the pricing perspective, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra for the Chinese market is set up pretty ambitiously. The base price starts at 6 999 CNY, which comes to roughly around €840 after conversion. That’s the cost of the phone itself without extra services and insurance—pure hardware with a complete set of features. If you add optional services in China, like a trade-in program, MiCare, or an extended warranty, we’re talking about dozens of euros extra, not hundreds. Cloud services are more or less symbolic—when converted to euros, it’s literally just a few euros per year.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra – Chinese prices by version:
- 12 GB / 512 GB: 6999 CNY (~840 €)
- 16 GB / 512 GB: 7499 CNY (~900 €)
- 16 GB / 1 TB: 8499 CNY (~1020 €)
A special highlight is the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition, aimed squarely at photography fans and the Leica aesthetic. This version differs from the standard Xiaomi 17 Ultra not only by the logo, but also in overall craftsmanship and philosophy. The Leica Edition features a distinctive two-tone body design, the iconic red Leica dot, a physically emphasized master zoom ring around the camera module, and pre-set Leica image profiles that reference the legendary M3 and M9 color rendering.
On the software side, it’s a differently tuned photo experience that focuses on natural colors, contrast, and a more film-like look. The camera hardware is the same; the difference lies in processing, details, and the overall feel that the Leica Edition delivers.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition – Chinese prices by version:
- 16 GB / 512 GB: 7999 CNY (~960 €)
- 16 GB / 1 TB: 8999 CNY (~1080 €)
The price of the Leica Edition in China is set exactly at the aforementioned 7 999 CNY, roughly €970, which makes it a more premium, yet still relatively “reasonable” Ultra flagship when you compare it with where the most expensive models of the competition are heading price-wise today. However, you should keep in mind that this is a China price without VAT, without import costs, and without global margin, so the same conversion for an official European launch would be more of an illusion than reality.
And that’s the key takeaway to close with. We expect a global launch of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra series later next year, and it’s practically certain that global pricing will be higher than in China. VAT, logistics, certifications, and a different pricing strategy for the European market all come into play. At the same time, we can expect small adjustments to the included bundle and packaging for the global version.
If Xiaomi manages to keep the price gap within reasonable limits, the 17 Ultra series—and especially the Leica Edition—has a very solid chance of becoming one of the most interesting camera phones of the year, even beyond China.
